Catscratch House and Habitat build

Just got home and went to water my trees. Several of them don't need water anymore. :(

The deer haven't cleaned up that sorghum yet? That looks about prime for that chow down to begin any day.

What happened to those potted trees?

Not a lot of deer using my plots this summer. Even got sunflower to bloom.

Potted trees were dug up and snipped at base. Squirrels?

Damn squirrels..

They only got 3 of the trees. The rest were dug into but not nipped. Moved the good ones into an old kennel and left some decoys out to grab their attention when they come back.

Nice mix of things in the truck bed.

Empty shotgun shells, sheds, & a big hammer in pick-up bed .... that's good redneckin right there! Just need a few empty beer cans to complete the package!

Got to keep the beer bottles cleaned out to go to work! No can do.

More of the same this evening, but with Chinkapin.

Only 1 floater total. Done collecting for the season.

Do you cold stratify? Direct seed? Both? What do you have the most success with?

Best trees (in my opinion) are direct seeded. If I were to plant sawtooths on my place I'd stratify in the fridge then direct seed with protection in early spring. The Chinkapin are a white oak that doesn't need stratification. I'm just collecting for class projects and to give away though.

Do the deer or any other creatures eat them off the trees or off the ground.
EVERYTHING eats persimmon. I believe it's mostly off the ground. Never seen evidence of them being eaten off the tree, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. Ever bite an unripe persimmon?

I appreciate that response. I planted some persimmons from the Dr. Deer people a few years ago and have had persimmons on the trees, never seen any indication they were eating off the tree.

Makes me feel better about where they go.

How long were your trees in the ground before they started to produce? I have a couple of grafted trees producing second yr. Surprised the hell out of me to find fruits on them this fall!

I think two years. I picked the small fruit off and then let them do their thing. Trees aren't huge but, are starting to produce regularly.

I'll try to post some picks in the next couple days.
