Call Me Crazy

5 year old buck +
My 66 acres are a mix of old pastures and woodland. As my number of planted trees top 300 I'm fast running out of space. I've started some Frankenapple trees but I've also started planting two trees in one hole. It will take some "inventive" pruning but I think they will be able to grow and bear me some apples. In 5 or 6 years I'll have a better idea if this was a good plan or a bust.

You maybe crazy but its not from planting two trees together; lol - I think we are all tree crazy here; anyways there is actually a name for it - a kind of art form when you plant them close enough to join them together with time. I would like to try it with willows. I thought about doing a apple tree in one dimension along a wall there is a name for that too, and wondered if you could do two apple trees together in some funky shape.

Some trees can be grown together more easily than others. When I've seen apple tree seedlings grow close together it isn't a good thing. The branches/trunks tend to rub and damage each other.

Yes I plan on pruning any limbs that grow toward the opposite tree. Just a fun way to fuel my apple tree addiction. A favorite old wild tree below my house has 6 trunks and produces lots of apples every year.

I am going with you are crazy. I don’t “make” my wife do many things at all. I don’t have the ability or desire to “make” her do things. However, I made her read your post. Now, she thinks I am normal and not so crazy because I only put one tree in a hole!!!!

Glad to be of help, WTNUT. :emoji_laughing:

apple trees "espalier style"

Seen apple trees grown together like this in France, and they were wickedly cool. Even a tunnel like arbor made up of different apple trees. They called them "Belgian Fences" if I remember right, I do think the proper term is espalier, that was the word i was searching for before. Anyways, can be and is commonly done. Reminds me of some of the columnar apple trees and how close they are planted to each other... It was just cool to see all the branches fused together without issues. There are drawbacks from what Ive read, disease sharing, and differing growth rates.

I think Lowes had some last year where 2 apple trees were in the same pot, with their trunks twisted around each other in a spiral for the first 4 feet above the soil line.

One thing about this hobby is it is usually cheap enough that we can experiment, and if we have failure it's no big deal. Last year I cleft grafted golden del and cripps pink to a wild apple tree, well I guess I wasn't paying attention to the buds when I grafted, and ended up with them crisscrossing.
I decided the other day to lightly cut into the cambium on them and see if I could get them to fuse together. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

That’s not how you cross apple varieties. ;)

Damn, I really wanted a Pink Delicious!!

This was the Fedco response. I am actually okay with the response, but the web page does not suggest they will be sending bare root scions with some roots ha IMG_3428.JPG

WTNUT,
I think you dropped this into the wrong topic post, here instead of your post on the shipped trees
