Black haw

I have several of these Black Haw trees on my home place I don’t think they are particularly useful for deer nutrition but they are an interesting little tree.

I might mistake that for elderberry in the distance.

The ones I have are smallish trees they don’t look anything like elderberry bushes to me. Mine don’t fruit very well being shaded understory trees. Three of them were growing under a big hickory I took out this winter so maybe they will fruit better this year.

They are sold by our state forest service in their conservation tree sales. I think they would be a great addition for some Fall color around the house.

Blackhaw Viburnum is great habitat shrub that tolerates quite a bit of shade. Not heavily browsed by deer, but great shrub for forests with heavier canopies.
