Best “People” Apples?

Our favorite eating apples that have had great DR for us.

Granny Smith, and it’s a late hanger
HoneyCrisp
Galarina
Hewes/Virginia crab

All on M111 for us
Have only gotten a couple Hewes and while smaller they are probably in my top 3 for eating so freaking good can’t wait till I get bunches!

Mine started slow too, then took right off. Maybe seven years in the ground.
Ours are also smaller about the size of a golf balls that look like little Honeycrisp.
We liked them so much we planted three more.

Anybody know of a people's apple that stand out particually well in applesauce or pies? Seems to be the majority of my house's use. Got granny smith and mcintosh, which seems to be common baking apples. Been wanting to try out enterprise, liberty, and sundance. Only 1 local orchard has a few liberty trres. I missed out on the small widnow this year though.

Empire.

I like Cortland for eating apple. It just seems to have the right balance for what I like in an apple and seems to be a good producer here in NY. I also like Fuji however I’ve got one in the yard that’s been here a while now and has never had an apple on it. I don’t know what the problem is with it. Got that one as a dwarf from Tractor Supply so who knows.

Cortland tempts me the most out of the cedar apple rust trees. IT's probably just one more spray for me, since I do late winter neem oil spraying.

Fuji is bloom group 3, so should of sruvived atleast one year

Zestar is a great early season 'people' apple. I am more than content eating Liberty and NY 35 Bonkers apples - still have bags of them in my fridge to eat on over the winter.

Zestar will likely be my replacement for the very rusty pristine I have. You got a zestar growing? Any disease issues? How soon does it bloom? Got chestnut and williams pride for early apples so far. Could use a good 3rd. Got a small trailman that needs to move, might go at camp though. Needs zone 3 up there

Yep, got a Zestar at my house and a few of them on the hunting land as well. Ripens late August. It blooms earlier than most. Doesn't store well at all, best to eat them within 3 weeks I’ve found, but oh so tasty.

Never tasted an apple better than a good honey crisp. I know they're known as being hard to grow. So I'd look at the MN cross of Liberty and honey crisp.

If you can find any near you, try a Crimson Topaz, or a Rosalea (Rosalea is a "club apple" and growers must get a license to grow it - so it may not be easy to find). Crimson Topaz can be found in many places - usually at roadside stands at orchards. CT is crisp, juicy, sweet, with a bit of tartness & tanginess to balance the sweetness. CT is also DR to most major apple tree diseases.

KinderKrisp is a very good tasting apple !

H2)Fowler,

They say galarina makes a smaller apple. I mainly cook with apples, which means peeling them. They a bit too tiny to peel? I got 3 growing at home, one on the edge of farmland I hunt. And I think I got 2 I grafted as gifts for coworkers. Think a hunting camp buddy has one too. Really should keep a chart of who has what from my nursery.

Wife and mother in law have been enjoying sweet sixteen this year. Handles blight and scab well. Does get a bit of rust and mildew, but nothing bad I hear. Got one on anty coming from saint lawrence.

Just a bump / update.

My wife and I hit a roadside orchard stand yesterday. They had, among other varieties, Sundance, Enterprise, and Goldrush. We have all 3 varieties at camp, but I've not had the chance to try Sundance or Enterprise yet, so we bought bags of each. Native Hunter said Sundance has become his favorite apple(?) - and it IS pretty tasty!! They're a big yellow apple. Enterprise is good too, but a more subdued flavor, and thicker skin. The owner said they have about 2 1/2 to 3 acres of Goldrush planted - great news to me. Bought a big bag of those too. Goldrush, Crimson Topaz, and Rosalea are our favorites for eating.

When I saw the baskets of Sundance apples on the roadside stand's table, I thought of Native Hunter, and his good reviews of them. He's right!!!

Nice find. I put 2 chips down on sundance at home. About the only disease resistant apples I can find locally are liberty. And of course the forbidden apple cosmic crisp.
