Apple identification

is there anyway to know apple varieties by look? There's a nice tree up the road I plan to graft that always has a lot of fruit. The guy there always just says they are red delicious and says the green apple is golden delicious. I don't think he's right on either. Here's a picture of the red one.

His green tree is usually loaded but didn't produce anything this year, only the red ones.
