I am with you early indicator of disease or decay. What does the top look like? I cut one down a few days ago looked mostly healthy but was completely hollow. There was a slight variation in color on the truck but no where near what you posted. It was also higher on the tree.

I'll take another look on my way through. I believe smooth patch might be the culprit.
