Acorns are dropping.

It seems really early, but on my walk to home depot at lunch I saw several oaks trees had dropped a bunch of acorns. One of them was a young red oak with a diameter of 8-10" and it had some huge acorns. See picture and tell me if you know what kind of red oak this is. That is a quarter in the picture, sorry wrong side up on the coin.20180806_123926.jpg

I would think they may be failing from some sort of stress. Acorns generally won't fall unless the nut itself starts to turn brown and then they pop loose form the cap. I would suspect that the nut in your picture may not be "mature" enough to grow. I was always told that its best to get acorns when they will pop free from the cap with only a little pressure. I could be wrong.....but a brown cap and a green nut like you have there....tells me something is wrong.

The chinkapin drop first here and they are still actively growing from what I can see.....

I was spraying food plots this weekend. I have a mature red oak 2’ diameter. It has dropped a ton that look just like that.

The burr oak that is about 100 yards up the street from this one had dropped a ton of acorns too. They were brown and most had popped out of the cap on contact.

Nova,

If you don't mind disclosing, where are these acorns? Back story: I signed up for a direct nut seed project with the DNR. So far I've seen an abysmal acorn crop in my neck of the woods(TRF). Last year it was strong so I bought an acorn collector(baganut), and then it got wet so I couldn't do my acorn thing.

This year, we're still good to go for the program, but now I have no acorns. Luckily my uncle in St. Cloud collected a ton for me from his yard, but chances are I won't have enough out of that harvest alone. If you've got areas, or people that want their acorns picked for free, I'll come down and collect if there are enough to fill my 55 gallon drums. I'm looking for Bur Oak, but wouldn't mind variety.

THanks!

Have you been really dry lately?

My trees have been dropping heavily. For the little bit I voyaged through the woods this past weekend, it looks like a bumper crop, which is good for the deer in my area, because I havent had a chance to plant a food plot this year. I am hoping for this weekend though.

I have also noticed some of the oaks in my area have huge acorns on them this year. I didn't make it out to the woods this weekend so cant say if they are dropping or not.

This might be the most acorns I have ever seen on my bur oaks/white oaks...the deer are loving it.

I guess I can expect my deer to ignore my brassica plantings again this year until all of the acorns are gone or the snow covers them up. I've also heard they are expecting a mild winter this year so they might not even get looked at.

I just got back from the farm and the acorns up there are covering the ground in the woods. The wild plums are dropping like crazy as are the cherry trees. The amount of food on the ground for the deer is incredible.

The acorns I was talking about are in Eagan, MN by my work, not my property. It's goofy you don't have them up there. Everyone I have talked to from southern MN to northern Mn have said there are acorns everywhere dropping like mad.

We were so dry in Texas this summer, I haven’t found a single oak with acorns outside of landscaping this year.

They are droping heavy in NY by me..it always seems too early, but it usually is in August

My pin oak in front yard is dropping acorns now.

The small grove of burr oaks by my dad's crossbow plot has two trees with a good amount of acorns this year, and they were dropping when I put a rubbing post in last week.

I checked my place and a location where I get my swamp white oaks and every thing is still green.....

I'm in VA and around here we often get our first acorn drop in September and occasionally in late Aug. Until that happens, I get very few pictures in our hardwood stands compared to our fields. This year, I started getting higher volumes of pictures in the hardwoods in early to mid august. While I didn't actually look for acorns, I presume that is what is going on here as well.

Thanks,

jack

My DCO's have started dropping. I'm not sure if it's due to stress or not, but they tend to be my earliest droppers every yr.

It looks like a banner year for white oaks here in south central Wisconsin and they are dropping in some of our storms. I expect food plot use to curtail soon. Maybe the brassicas will get to form decent bulbs for a change.
