A.C. What's wrong with them?

They look deficient or sick to me. I know nothing about this plant, but all that I planted this spring look like this. The one's I see in pics are always darker green and "healthier" looking. Ideas?

Have they been that way long? My native trees in the field are starting to turn right now. They get that yellow tinge to them when they start. The ones on my deck in root makers are still a deep green.

They've looked like this all yr. Maybe a little more yellow now, but I've thought they looked unhealthy since they leafed out.

Have you ever seen healthy ACs in your area? I would guess your soil pH is like me and maybe too high for healthy ACs to occur naturally.

Never seen an AC before I planted these. Last yrs soil test showed pH 6.3. What do they prefer?

My soils are between 4.5 and 5.5. and they grow natively on my place. When I grow them from seed, I'm starting with a 7.0 neutral pH medium, but I'm using rain water which is acidic. They seem to grow well with none of that yellowing under lights in 18s, in 1 gal and 3 gal RB2s on my deck, and on my farm. About this time of year, mine begin to turn. The burs are just opening. I've collected some nuts yesterday, but I still had many burs that had not opened. When my leaves get ready to turn, they get a little yellow in them, but it seems to happen more on a leaf by leaf basis rather than the entire tree. I can't say the tree I see in the picture looks sick, but if the color I see is accurate, it does not look like the deep green my trees get when they are growing well.

I'll try to dig the ACs out on my deck and take a picture.

Thanks,

jack

I got a chance to take a picture of mine tonight. I started these this year in 18s, transplanted them to 1 gals and then 3 gals.

They have always been that deeper green color. These are probably not turning yet because of better conditions than the trees in the field. Again, the medium was neutral but probably slowly adjusted to slightly acidic by the rain water I use for watering. I don't know if it helps much but at least it is something for comparison.

Thanks,

Jack

^^^ mine have never looked like that! There has to be something going on...
