Callery Pear topworked to Hunter's Choice (one year ago)

My cousin and I top-worked a couple dozen callery pears that were growing wild all over the property. We used a bunch of scions from GRIN and some others I got off trees on our land. Success rate was probably 80-90% and growth ranged from six inches to four feet after first year.

    Tree ordering

For the most part, I've followed the lead of CrazyEd and others on the forum. Definitely full sun and watered daily. Weeds are not my friends. The landscape fabric between rows has helped. I think it is 8'x16'. I ordered 50/50 topsoil and mushroom compost in year one. This year, I topped it...

    Opinions, experience with Granny Smith?

I am in Upstate NY as well. I have approx 30 varieties planted, but agree that Enterprise, Goldrush and Sundance are solid. My trees are young, but all three have produced nice apples. I had Enterprise still hanging at end of gun season.

    Tree ordering

I started grafting in 2014. Set up a small fenced in backyard nursery. Watering the trees every day brings great satisfaction, especially when the property is an hour away. And, I have the varieties I want on the rootstocks I want.

    Sundance (Co-op 29)

Thanks for the heads up on Henry Fields. M111 would be fine. I'll watch the inventories for Cummins and elsewhere after September. It's is a really nicely shaped and vigorous growing tree. Drop time is supposed to be late. This is first year with apples, so we'll see if bears don't get them...

    Sundance (Co-op 29)

Sundance is my favorite variety of the 100+ trees I've planted. I have three I bought from Cummings and they are doing great. So, I'd like to plant more. However, even though I have 50 one- and two-year old trees I grafted growing in my nursery, none are Sundance because of the patent that...

    Kieffer pear and fireblight

I have six Trophy and Docs Special pears I planted in 2009. I recall slight evidence of FB on one of the trees last year. This year 4 of the 6 look just like Eggman's pics. Of course this is the first year I was expecting a decent crop of more than 10-20 pears per tree. Arrrgggghhhh! Also...

    2014 Grafting Adventures of CrazyED

Planted 30 of 35 from year's grafts today. I grafted Swamp apple (wild), Enterprise, Liberty, Kerr and Chestnut Crab. In the picture, they are mixed in with a few small trees and other rootstocks I regrafted onto from last year.

1st rd done of grafting complete.

I did 33 w/t and 2 cleft this year. I cut myself badly first year. Bought cut-resistant glove for left hand and no longer afraid of w/t. When size mismatch, I use side of larger one. Results tbd. Will probably be another week or two before they wake up.

    Cages

I use 4 ft high welded wire. 100 ft roll yields six pieces cut to 16'8".

    Here we go

My pics show example of double boiler setup. This is a tip I got on the forum and used for the first time last year. I use a coat hanger to dip in the melted wax and paint on the tip of the scion and top and bottom of grafting tape.

    Here we go

Grafted 35 trees last weekend on B-118. 16 Swamp Apple (a wild tree on the property that the deer love), 10 Enterprise, 4 Liberty, 3 Kerr and 2 Chestnut Crab.

    Golden Hornet Crab

I purchased 12 golden hornets on mm111 from Wafler Nursery in NY last week. They still had 29 available. I have ordered from there in the past and was very satisfied with quality and price. I live relatively close, so not sure if they ship.
