    350 Legend

My son got a doe at 85 yards with the 350 last week. Bullet hit a couple inches back, went through a rib then liver and out the opposite side. Blood trail was easy to follow, especially on the exit side. She did make a 130 yard run but was dead quickly as he heard her crash. IMO, the Remington...

    Drone Laws

Direct language from an Illinois DNR press release: The use of unmanned aircraft, or drones, for any aspect of hunting or recovery of wildlife is unlawful in Illinois.

How Many Deer Do You Expect to See in One Hunt?

Bow season I expect to see 1-3 deer per sit but zero sits are not uncommon at all. Gun season I expect to see on average a deer every other day. Sometimes it's a group of 4 one time in 7-8 days of hunting. I typically pass on several opportunities each year and only harvest one leaving a...

    Top Tier Gasoline

My father was a stabil guy. When I found a bottle in the basement with all kinds of sediment crap in it I swore it off. Seafoam in all my infrequently used stuff (ATVs, snowmobiles, chainsaws, snowblowers, etc) and carb issues are far and few between.

    Wisconsin Opener

I'm sure we are down in my zone. But since this is the first year of yet another boundary change we have no true harvest history to compare anymore.

    Are hunter numbers declining?

On a local level I would say numbers are way down here in the central forest region of Wisconsin. We have a ton of public land and before the herd slaughter in the early 2000's it was hard to find a spot in the lot and nearly impossible to sit without seeing orange. The hunters have left...

    Top Tier Gasoline

Wait, you pay the dealer to change air filters 😱. I fill with the cheapest gasoline I can find from any large chain of stations. Top tier certification/sticker on the pump is all BS marketing that the stations pay for. Do all my own oil and filter changes at regular Intervals. Saves money and I...

    Live from the stand thread

Central Wisconsin. We can blame the wolves, the DNR, the neighbors, etc. But regardless of all that it's just not that good of ground. Mostly forest with little agriculture, infertile sandy soil, flat as a board. Racks are poor. Food, cover, and bedding all bundled together. Endless network of...

You aren't the only one hunting tough ground. This is day 4 of our rifle season and none of us have seen a deer yet. Buck "sightings" are not an every year thing around here, let alone harvesting a buck, any buck.

    2025 Bow Bucks

It should be a fun season. We have a new hunter in camp this year so he has green light for whatever he chooses. I'll be letting anything without antlers walk until he gets one, at least for opening day 😜

    2025 Bow Bucks

I haven't had the time to hunt this year. Local doe population seemed good all summer but cameras have been eerily quiet for over a month now. I don't know why but bucks have been scarce all year.

Nice bucks, congrats on the successful season!

    Live from the stand thread

I've been hearing more shots bow season vs gun season for a few years now. Mostly early and late, must be busy during the midday hours.

    Tree Spud

Sad to hear this. His property was two counties over from mine and although we never met in person, we communicated frequently through these deer forums and were both OG members here. I spent the last hour going through some of our old DM's. He really was an upstanding, humble man. It also...

    Permanent herd building insanity?

Pick out a territorial doe to hunt. Her fawns will herd up with others once winter hits and they will likely survive. With the old nanny removed you may see a net increase in the number of doe using your property next year.
