November Pruning

View attachment 32572There are 8 trees here planted spring 2017. Newbie fruit tree grower. Is it ok to prune those low branches now, or should that be done later in winter?

Depends on location,

I always dormant prune in the spring.
We get some brutal winters and dont want to stress or injure the tree going into dormancy.

And I try to time it when we get out last big freeze potential. I usually shoot for mid march.

I agree with trampled, shoot for late winter, early spring if you can… November, not so much. Mid-February to mid-March is my preferred time to prune here in NY. Apple trees are pretty forgiving, so if it stretches later into spring, it’s not the end of the world in my opinion.

The best time to prune is when you can - closely followed by those more preferable dormant times.

I snipped a few low small diameter limbs as I did my orchard cleanup a few weeks ago. I was there. I had pruners. They were in the way of adjusting cages and cleaning out weeds. I'll get the rest in late Feb or March.

I too shoot for late March...but a question...anybody ever seen early pruning (dormant but say now, mid-December) damage or detriment? I’ve got 70 trees (varying ages) and packing it all into March is a bit much. I’m thinking I’ll start with my least favorites now and save a few good ones for later.

Yes. I had some Red Melba trees get some diseases that look like canker. Also some plums.

I like to prune in February.
