My wife made some juice from ABC. She will can it for jelly to be made in the winter. She feels the ABC has a bit of a cherry flavor.

Do you mix the ABC's into your cider to Art?

I did for the last batch of cider. The tree is in an exclosure and we only picked what we can reach from one side.

I need to open the fence and go in or else take the fence down in the spring.

The tree needs more room but is the dominant tree of about six in the exclosure.
There is an ABC on B 118 (second leaf) from small chunk that is about 75 feet from the house. Good deal for an old man to pick in a few years.

Kerr crab was not disease free, but the fruit was pretty clean.

The last batch of cider for the year will consist of Kerr, Frostbite, and a bit of Wickson.

Most of the Wickson cracked on me.

I could not use 95% of the Wickson due to the cracks. Is this common for Wickson?

Photo of wickson from a cider maker in NY. Shows similar cracking. Might be due to apple scab.

That looks just the same. I have cleaned up under the tree and mowed it short. After all of the fruit is gone and leaves have fallen, I will mow again. Maybe spread some powdered lime.

Sandbur ... so you do not use the apples with cracks for cider?

I tasted one with cracks and it had a bad taste. None with cracks will go in the cider.

Great producing tree Sandbur. The leaves are rough but it has been a rough year and many trees here are showing rough leaves as well. The combination of drought and excessive heat here definitely weakened some of our trees.

I had lots of disease this year and am making an effort to clean up around the trees in the home orchard.

Wildlife trees are pretty much on their own except a few select seedlings.

I have a variety of Crabapples (Centennial, Chestnut, Whitney, Dolgo, Transendent & Prairie) that are 4 years old. Any idea on the drop times for these specific crabapples, Bur?

I posted in the other thread. Centennial is about late August when I pick them. Dolgo starts dropping about Labor Day and a few apples hang on into winter. Chestnut drops about the last three weeks of Sept, with some apples into winter.

I just took some pictures.

Dolgo. We picked many of the crabs we could reach.

Chestnut still has enough apples to attract some deer.

Big Dog is also attracting deer.

I had a very small apple crop this year with the exceptions of a few trees. Last year I had lots of apples.

I have two grafted Big Dogs that are younger and produced apples. Also one tree that I suspect is a Big Dog seedling.

Some seedlings did come through with crabs.

I picked all of these I could reach for cider, but it is still holding some fruit.

Courthouse Crab still looks great. It is the rootstock from a flowering crab. The flowering crab is mainly to the right.

This crab has grown well on dolgo rootstock for me, but is on second leaf with no fruit. I like the size of the fruit.

How do you pick crabapples? One by one, or strip a bunch at a time?
