best ATV seeder

Steve Bartylla

5 year old buck +
I need to buy an ATV seeder for a client. I've always used the same one, as it just works for me. However, when buying for a client, I'm far more concerned with getting the best for the money than when buying for myself.

This would merely be for top seeding brassicas, oats and cereal rye into existing plantings. No need to handle fertilizer or lime. They have a Firminator for planting (I'll do a review several asked for on this later...for now I'll just say that I'm VERY impressed...I've put just over 10 acres of soybeans in with the ATV model, including working standing cereal rye in. That sucker is a machine). Most places I merely use a hand seeder for this type of work, but we'll be top seeding somewhere over 20 acres and that's a lot of hand seeding.

What do you guys think is the best buy for the $ on an ATV seeder?

As a side note, I'm leaving in the AM, but will try to check with my phone. If I don't reply in a timely manner, it isn't because I'm ignoring this.

Thanks in advance!

I have this spreader going on 6 years now. Just over $100 with free shipping! I use it on about 6-8 acres per year for seed and fertilizer. Works great, and I like it mounted on the front of my 4 wheeler so I can watch the flow of seed or fertilizer without looking backwards. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-MOULTRIE-FEEDERS-ATV-Food-Plot-Spreader-Seeder-w-Plastic-Tapered-Hopper-/231178253809?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35d34c35f1

image.jpg This was my first year with an earthway spreading brassicas. I bought 2 spreaders out of the box cheap when gander mountain in maple grove closed about 5 years ago.I bought a bigger unit and the earthway. My bigger one was bulky and a pain to mount. This little earthway works awesome. The linkage and the sliding mechanism are very smooth for planting small seeds. I was worried at first so I taped off the holes in the bottom half way but I probably didn't need to. The little motor is smooth and quiet. I highly recommend it for a seed only unit. Not sure how it performs with fertilizer but I'm sure it's fine. I think pricing is under $200

I had one similar years ago. Funny how much food plot grew in my ATV in all the crevices that held dirt. :)

So you guys are seeding small seeds with atv seeders successfully? I'm listening.

I've always been told forget anything but a hand seeder for broadcasting tiny seeds. I've done oats and rye with the atv. Never small seeds.

Steve sorry. I hope I don't hjack your thread

I use oats mixed with clover and brassi when I use an ATV spreader.

If I am doing smaller plots, I walk with the little 2 lb hand held with no "filler seed".

I have to get a shield on the back side of my spinner so any carryover seeds just drop straight down.

Maybe you could start using it as a mobile food plot? o_O

BJE,
You might be onto something!

It could look like Moses leading people out of Egypt. Just that I am Moses on the ATV, with a flock of deer trailing me!

Yep! Works great!

MO - Is that a straight seeding or grains mixed in? I might have to try some straight seeding if it works for you guys with atvs.

Steve - Sorry we high jacked your thread too.

Everything.

It may have been the brand of ATV spreader I had, but it didnt have a very good flapper thingy. It didnt "lock" in real well and before you knew it, it was slightly open more from probably vibration/rattling and dumping a lot more seed then I wanted.

Mixing with oats, I was able to get a little better rate overall it seemed.

Any tips, or techniques you can share that made it work for you?

Yes, when the 10 year old chinese kid put mine together, he didn't care if things were a little off. There are 2 holes in the bottom of the moultrie spreader I have. When the metal flapper opens up to let the seed out, one hole let out more seed than the other causing more turnips to fly out one side than the other. So I took a round file and made the holes match up. Made for a very even seed drop onto the spinner. The other thing was mounting the spreader on the front of the machine to watch seed flow a little better. And I remounted it angled up. I found out when filling the hopper it would sag down some and not shoot the seeds out flat. Now they shoot out up higher and farther. Plus you have to oil the motor bearing after using fertilizer.

I would just have to figure out a way to mount it to the front of a UTV.

When I get there tomorrow I will take a picture of how I have it mounted and post it. The other thing I like about this spreader is it detaches with 2 pins and comes right off.

Mo can you turn on your private messages?
