At least with seedlings, you’ll usually growth from below the girdling or suckers from the roots. Just lost a bit of time. With a grafted, you might have to regraft and then hopefully have scions for it.

Your picture of the hose also contains likely the most important element, the stones. I'm definitely adding more stones to my planted seedlings from last year and this year. For the nursery I'll just go with a perimeter fence of hardware cloth buried six to eight inches down. Height to be above ground is up to at least 3 feet now and maybe four would be better. The reason for thinking higher for the hardware cloth is not a day after I had read Sandburs' post on is it also rabbit proof, I watched a teenage size rabbit walk thru the 2x4 wire fencing without even flinching. Thus it became obvious that the 2x4 fencing will not prohibit medium sized aged rabbits from entering. In addition to a vole control/reduction program, a rabbit reduction effort just prior to winter may also be required. Having a a safe tree nursery area is evidently no small task.

Maybe some resident barn cats need to reside in there.

I guess there is a bright spot of having a high predator population - we have basically no rabbits, voles, mice, or rats. Only thing libel to girdle our trees is fireants if you put tubes on them

The wife and I were on our way to eat about thirty miles from our house. As we were driving by I noticed a row of old crabs planted along the road we were on, one had reddish leaves and a bunch of nickel sized apples so I had to circle back and get a closer look.





Yep….red flesh!


They had a bitter taste that may get a little milder as fruit ripens? But could be a possibility to mix in cider.

Then I noticed two trees down another interesting crab, golf ball size apples and took a look.





Good taste and I like the size.
So, two more I will be poaching a few scions off this winter!

Possible great finds H20Fowler! Those trees have been taking up some good looking real estate for a long time. There may be a good reason. We have been lucky so far in that every case we have asked for scions, the owners have been happy to oblige us. Further they have enjoyed sharing all kinds of info(technical and history) about their trees. And in one case the conversation led us to a whole ridge of a couple hundred wild trees hidden from view.

OOPS! am very impressed with the growth on my 2020 planting of 30-06. It is a growing machine. It is too early to tell anything about the apples but the tree is a definite fast grower. Trimmed one today of the fifteen planted down to just the trunk and a few short branches and removed all of the leaves. As a one year old it was seven feet tall. I wish I could say I was testing its resilience but truth be told we sprayed it by mistake with a full dose of Roundup when we were spraying the field to plant brassicas. We removed all of its leaves and trimmed the branches down to stubs. We shall see what happens. Have no clue!

just everyone know I that I appreciate all and am joying every day and doing as much habitat improvements ever. Both of these forums have been a source of joy to be. It is for just not possible to write online. worst of my brain is working and has improved from early September. Word signals are a difficulty for now.

Thank you for sharing the great picture Native. Your Turning Point looks excellent, great large leaves and so nice and green. Likely no tree will work every where but I know that it will be as good as it can living on your property.
