    A look at the orchard

The orchard is doing well, with the exception of 20 - 30 trees on B118 rootstock that are either leaners or have completely fallen over. I try to spray every two weeks or so due to Marssonia leaf Blight that is prevalent in my area. I would rate my standout trees to be Liberty, Querina...

    Fall projects for ponds

Stocked 100, 5" - 6" rainbow trout a few weeks ago. If all goes according to plan they should be pushing 16" by next June.

    Covered deck installation

Skelly, does this bracket include an anchor for installing in wet concrete when poured or are you required to wait until the concrete dries and then drill the hardened concrete to install a fastener?

    Covered deck installation

Bill, Catscratch, Skelly, that's kind of what I had imagined doing but wasn't very clear in my description. Thanks for the reinforcement. I am still still looking for a good strong galvanized steel bracket that is easy to install, sets in wet concrete and secures the base of the 4 x 4 posts.

    Covered deck installation

After years of procrastination , I have finally decided to build a covered deck/porch off of the North side of our cabin overlooking our pond. The deck will run the entire length of the cabin North wall about 32' and extend about 10' from the cabin. The cabin side of the deck and new steel roof...

    Marssonina Leaf Blotch

Some of the apple trees in my orchard have been hit hard by the Marssonina Leaf Blotch this year. I also first noted the problem in 2018 and have had problems every year since with some of the varieties being fully defoliated by August/September. I have tried to keep up with fungicide sprays...

    Anyone growing Sundance apples ?

My Sundance trees have been bearing fruit for about 3 or 4 years now. I would rate it on par with Galarina and Goldrush as being a late hanger with my notes listing it as having a quite a few apples still hanging through January last year. Apple ripens about the first of November in zone 5a...

    Florina

I attempted to develop an "Apple drop chart" based on my orchard location in Western NY. Finally gave up as it seemed that I always had something more important to do at the time. From my limited entries in 2017, I listed Querina as dropping approximately 40% of fruit by Nov. 1st and 70% by...

    Emla 111 vs Bud 118

I have found that how heavy my trees bear is more determined by the scion variety than the rootstock. Here is a picture of Querina on ELMA111 rootstock.

    Any 25-06 fans??

I have been using a Rem 700 BDL in the 25-06 for many years now, bought in the early 70's. Has never failed me on whitetail. Took it to Alaska where it was deadly on caribou.

    Emla 111 vs Bud 118

I won't plant another B118 tree. Of my about 30 trees on B118 rootstock over half are leaning. Fortunatelly, my 70 plus trees on M111 are all standing erect. My soil is generally heavy clay.

    A look at the orchard

Made it to camp today, quite a few apples still hanging on Goldrush, closely followed by Sundance and a few still on Liberty

    Fish Feeders

It is anchored to T-posts located on opposite sides of the pond so it moves back and forth a little with the slack in the line depending on wind direction. There is a pulley secured to each T-post with the line wrapped around the pulley and the ends secured to opposite sides of the float. I can...

    Garden plants

I rototilled the garden last week before the cold weather hit. My tomato plants are in the house as it is 34 degrees outside now. Our asparagus was about 4 - 6" high and froze last night as we had a hard freeze. Typical spring in Western NY.
