    Chestnuts finally!

I sought out the most cold tolerant hybrid stock I could find. I have plants from badgerset, new forest farm and twisted tree farm, but the ones that are producing are from the first two.

    Chestnuts finally!

Finally got to my farm in western wi and am excited to see we finally got some our chestnuts to produce some nuts. Probably a total of 20 nuts across 4 different trees so not too crazy but wasn’t really sure if it would happen in this zone and it’s been around 10 years I’d say all in all.

Chicory filling an important time gap for me

Couldn’t agree more on the chicory…I planted some with clover on my septic mound and it’s been a huge draw, especially with the dry weather. I have been able to water it some but I have a bachelor group coming out daily to hit it the last 3 weeks or so. Definitely planning to bump up the amount...

Oaks that hold leaves for mn/wi

Oaks that hold leaves for mn/wi

What oaks seems to hold their leaves the longest? I see them around and they appear to be white oaks when I’m able to check out the leaves, but wanted to see if anyone had specifics. I have some pin oak seedlings but not sure how they will do in my area, I’m looking at the twin cities area and...

    Cultipacker bearing question

I used up all the parts I had unfortunately. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet but I think it should do the job for the small amount of planting I’ll be doing with it.

    Cultipacker bearing question

We cut an old 8’ in half to make one suitable for an atv. Not sure the weight but should be good enough for plots and I have a new yard I’m working on also

    Cultipacker bearing question

I am assembling a cultipacker and fleet farm had the bearing below available. Not sure it’s heavy duty enough for a cultipacker, is there a specific type or grade I should be looking for?

    Chestnuts in colder climates

Mark Shepard is in sw Wisconsin and has a grove of complex hybrids growing and producing there. My guess is that dunstan won’t do very well in that area, I’ve tried a little farther n of lacrosse without success. Winter dieback most years and resprouting from the roots is typical.

    Norway Spruce Screen Decisions

Good info, I pot up or plant some trees in a protected spot to always have access to some bigger trees every year. It’s nice for filling in the gaps and before you know it, there are some good sized trees at your disposal

    Giant Miscanthus

Real world miscanthus seem to be doing better in zone 4, I have some of the Illinois strain that have been growing for 10+ years and is good, but a lot of that has been winter killed or damaged. I’m optimistic for the real world variety. It’s off to a good start, I’m in year 2 with it
