Throw-n-mow sunflowers and pumpkins doing pretty well so far. It sure makes a difference if a seed isn't under thatch.

What did you broadcast that into? Any before pictures?

Same brassica plot as above from an Oak tree on one end. November 30th 2016. A lot of yellow in there. This area extends quite a ways back into a known bedding area. I get a lot of photos of bucks cruising the edges of this cover. I left the clumps of trees in when I cleared this 2 years ago. I might clear a few out before fall.

Mixed plot of wheat and clover. Pull behind spreader and pushed down with a skid steer bucket.

What did you broadcast that into? Any before pictures?

Here is last years Brassica plot on September 21st. It grew like wild fire. I didn't get much use on it though. I put down way too much seed and had very little nutrients in the soil. I did put down 300 lbs of 19-19-19 but we had a lot of rain. I think most of it was leached away. Plot is just over 3/4 of an acre. I have posted photos of this plot before on this thread and it's going to throw and mow this year. I put down 200 lbs of 6-24-24 a few weeks ago. I will be getting a soil sample in the next few weeks.

I will amend the soil with the recommendations then broadcasting WR, Oats, Peas, clover, and radish. It will be my first throw and mow. Just to the west of this plot will be a 2 acre destination plot surrounded by 6 acres of switch. Both plots are surrounded by good bedding.
That plot looks like it did pretty well! Did you mean it didn't get much use from the deer? How long does it take for fertilizer to leach through the soil?

That picture is deceiving. I'll see if I can find some close ups. There is a lot of insect damage, yellowing and some other signs of unhealthy plants. The brassicas themselves grew out of this world but with too much seed there seemed to be a lack of nutrients. I already had very low nutrients in the soil.

I am not sure how long it takes the nutrients to leach from the soil but we had a lot of rain in the two weeks after planting and fertilizing.

That was the first year I had planted brassicas and no one in the immediate area plants any food plots. We are surrounded by about 600 acres of Ag fields. The deer use was almost non-existent.

Not quite sure how this update will come up in this forum. After 4 weeks, the buckwheat is doing great! Had a lot of rain which probably helped. It's knee high in places. I fertilized today with 29-0-4. Pulled my trail can picks and had deer feeding. And for the first time ever... I had turkeys on my trail cam! I couldn't be happier. Within the next 30 days I will knock down the buckwheat and plant my turnips, kale and brassica.

Wow! The whole field is buzzing from the sound of the bees! This is great. Deer are hitting it well. Hoping it will last another 4 weeks. I do have spots in the field where things didn't grow as well and you can see that in one photo. Hopefully over time that changes.

Nice looking buckwheat.

Here is the field that will be the throw n' mow plot this fall. Any idea if this will leave enough thatch over top of everything?

Hey Yoderjac, that was a very specific response on the previous page. Where can I find your source of temperature specific info for crops? My buckwheat planted with sorghum and sunn hemp came up ahead then got cleaned out in 2 days. After germination, I got night time temperatures in the 40's. Today, 6/3 at 6:24 am, the temp, not soil temp, is 50 degrees.
I am planning on following with brassicas, radish and peas in this field. Can I broadcast buckwheat again into the sorghum and sunn hemp again without cultipacking?

I think there will be plenty as long as you seed before mowing. I've had success with even less than that

First year with T&M method....put in a mix of buckwheat, oats, and spring forage peas 5 weeks ago into HEAVY thatch/weeds/rye from last fall. Didn't spray it because, well, I didn't bring my brain with me that day and forgot my friggin sprayer and the property is 3 hours away so it wasn't happening. Not a huge deal for my summer plots though as I really only have them for soil building and something for critters to munch on.

The buckwheat is looking pretty awesome so far, very few peas and oats are just starting to sprout.

Here is a picture of the plot:

On the far side where the shade/tree is, the BW seems to be doing really well:
19702333_10100187613623257_928271054763516539_n.jpg

However, in the middle closer to where I'm standing it is yellowing quite a bit already:
19601245_10100187613683137_8881555567235792135_n.jpg

I always assumed this to be a soil moisture issue as the spot I'm standing in gets hit with sun lights basically all day. And I haven't added any fertilizer.

My question....Is it soil moisture or lack or nutrients hindering the BW on the sunny part of the plot?

If you give that buckwheat some nitrogen now those yellow plants will be 12" tall and lush green two weeks later. Some will say that buckwheat doesn't "need" fertilizer but I've found that it sure does respond well to it.

On June 12th I broadcast 100 lbs of Oats (whole oats) on to concrete like soil to try and fill in some bare spots and create some more bio-mass for the fall plot. It didn't rain much over the next 3 weeks but two nights in a row we were pounded with rain and storms. I was happy to see newly sprouted Oats. Germination hasn't been great but acceptable.

I had plans to broadcast WR, WW, AWP, Oats, and Forage Radishes in the plot late August. But an unplanned vacation popped up so my options are to plant prior to August 16th or wait until September 1st. I am located in zone 6A. Any thoughts on what would be better timing? I see some guys planting the brassicas in July but for me and my soil type it's just too early. I planted on August 11th last year and I think it was a week too early.

The first photo is a little deer browse on my natural weed bio-mat.

Did a throw and mow this last week, I had a clover plot and a alfalfa plot that were over grown with grass and weeds. I had some left over buckwheat and rye from another plot and I added some sunflowers to it. We'll see how it turns out.

Base on what you wrote, planting prior to August 16 would duplicate last years planting. Coin toss, but I might plant September 1.

It would be within 4 days of last years planting correct. A bit different on planting method but probably too early in the process to make much of a difference. It will have WR and WW in it so maybe later will be better. I'll just order all the seed and have it ready on the day I return. Thx

I planted rye 8/28 last year. No rain for weeks. In a very sandy field I planted winter wheat 9/28 as an experiment and another area. The rye did finally germinate and grew nicely. Very good growth in the spring. The winter wheat really surprised me with growth and regrowth this spring.

My spray, broadcast soybeans and walk away was a bust.

Looks like they got enough moisture to swell but then they dried out. Sprayed again for good measure. The plan is to broadcast brassica's in, then mow this time. I'm about two weeks early for turnips but I'm here and there isn't any rain in the 10 day so.......

Almost a shame to terminate such a good stand of clover. But...I did just spray off a portion of it. Never tried the LC mix and wanted to try it this year. I'm thinking even hitting it a bit heavy with gly won't keep the clover from taking over the turnips in the fall. We'll see.

Nice clover. Anxious to see how this turns out.
