Big 8, Thoughts age, Homebody

Steven Tolly

5 year old buck +
He is a homebody deer. We have pictures of him from all summer and he moved to another side of the farm just recently. So we could pass and possible seem him again, but I am not sure I am strong enough to pass.

Something says 3.5 to me. I'd like to see him next to a year old buck to have some perspective though.

I always think 3.5. So I wonder if I am biased or just every decent deer in the area is 3.5.

I think probably 4.5.

Not sure on age but he sure is nice. I love tall G2's!

That's a good looking eight! Without any history, the best we can do is guess. My guess is he is probably a 4 year old. I have found trail camera pictures from years past to be an invaluable tool for deciphering age.

Let us know when you send in a tooth sample. I would love to have a giant 8 like that. Very rare where I hunt.

We might have some from last year, but an average 8 on our ground is not a big deal. We might not have even noticed him. I might have to do a little looking though and see what I can find.

IMHO, at least 3.5, possibly 4.5. Pretty buck, I'd have same dilemma on waiting a year!

I'd say 4.5 by the muscle definition in front shoulders an flat none arching stomach. Not sagging yet so not a 5.5

Also, I could not pass on him if he walked by my stand.

That first picture sure looks like a 4.5 year old to me. Actually all of them do, but especially the first one. That's a dandy!!

If he's a homebody and you don't have anyone who "has" to shoot him, I'd let him walk.

But if you've got kids or a less seasoned hunter hunting him, I'd let it rip.

That's a cool buck

Nice buck ... guess is 4

I'd guess 3.5 but in November he might look more like a 4.5 during the rut.
Great G2's. It would be hard not to take it especially with a bow but with a gun I'd have to think about it.
No real good reason, thats just the way I do it. It's easier for me to judge a buck in bow range. And less likely to be disappointed when he's ground checked.
Thats a good problem to have though. Good luck.
