    Venison Processing Changes in Wis

When i lived in Florida, i was the oddball that gutted deer. It was common to have deer out for a half day in temps that would fry peoples minds in the midwest. Never heard of any issues though. Process my own now in Indiana. The best local livestock processor quit doing deer this year. All the...

    Favorite Rub Trees

Red cedar is probably #1 that i see around here. Tulip poplar might be close 2nd. After that i have seen about everything used, especially when in the sapling stage Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk

    Crossbow Recommendation?

I am not sure what to make of all the worries over bow noise. It seems deer jump strings, but they never have when my "loud" and slowest Excalibur goes off at around 270fps. Considering louder xbows to be deer wounders is so far from the truth in our experience. 3 others in my family hunt with...

    Crossbow Recommendation?

I have killed a lot of deer with crossbows that shoot below 300fps and are pretty loud for the last decade. Never had an issue, all complete pass throughs. More speed does have some benefits, but also drawbacks like reducing life span of bow components. Wish i had the money to own all of them...

    Crossbow Recommendation?

Ravins are nice, but $$ and complex. Lots of good crossbows out there anymore. I mainly use Excalibur recurves for ease of maintenance. They are also very accurate. Tenpoint and Scorpyd are also well thought of brands just to name a couple. Do your research for sure! I am not in total agreement...

2018 Hoosier state rules are out

Agree, he is in a lucky situation. Different neighbors and everything changes...makes managing even by county difficult and there is no perfect answer. I hunt a several hundred acre farm...neighbors harvest behavior changes are very noticeable...probably 75% drop in deer sightings last 5 years...

2018 Hoosier state rules are out

Glad they dropped the doe quotas where i hunt!! They claim very few people shoot many does...not true in my experience though. Maybe few report it, who knows Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk

    American Elm?

If you would snap a ridge of bark off the tree by hand and look at the cross-section....american elm will have red and white alternating layers like stripes on the U.S. flag. Red elm is just red inside bark. Thats how i was taught to ID it anyway Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk

    Wind.

I have the same situation on my land as some others have stated. Big ridges and hollows, and the wind forecast means nothing other than the wind speed. A normal sit means you notice a big wind shift multiple times an hour. I started smoking my clothes, boots, and myself last year with a bee...

    Muzzle loader slugs

We have often had the same issues....almost no blood with shockwaves, but dead deer. On a rare shot we will get good trails. I have switched to 44 mag bullets in a sabot but can't report on results yet. I agree with the above.....love BH209. Pellets are simple, but my accuracy now is...

    Calling Hoosier deer hunters!!!

I hope it turns out to be a good thing (really dont know either way). Just heard about it last night Heard they want to raise hunting and fishing licenses again. Not real happy about that. Wouldn't mind if you could see a direct correlation to a better DNR and resources instead of the money...

    Muzzleloader storage

This is interesting to me. I clean guns religiously, and got bit by my one experiment with bore butter. Must have been something else going on, just hard to believe powder residue all over my barrel after cleaning. Wasnt trying to slam bore butter, but i am scared of it after having good luck...

    Muzzleloader storage

I think he might have had her clean, but used bore butter for long term storage as some still swear by it...that's the advice I got that I regret listening to. It did something to my barrel (pulled in moisture??) to cause it to rust all over the inside. I think bore butter might be a fine...

    Muzzleloader storage

Treat it like a regular rifle like several people said above. Good gun oil and regular cleaning solvents...there is nothing special about cleaning/caring for a muzzleloader other than having to be more thorough. I was sick the year I wintered my Encore in bore butter only to find it rusted...

    What's your weapon of choice?

1st choice....recurve crossbow now that i see enough deer to make it interesting. Limit to 40 yd max...all mine have been under 30. 60+ yds is nuts for 99% of the bows out there imo. 2nd choice...ruger 77 in 44 mag. My favorite woods gun 3rd choice...CVA wolf .50 cal mzzldr. Outshoots my TC...
