Sugar beet Plot 2018

Looks great! When did you plant them?

I had two sources for seed this year but both fell through. Needless to say I dont have a SB plot. Maybe next year.

Around May 20th, don't remember the exact date.

Nice job, Looks clean

Looks good.

They do look great!

Wow! They look awesome! Are those Roundup Ready sugar beets? What rate (#/acre) did you seed them at. Tell us a little about how you planted them??

Those look great. My deer ignore tubers and have considered beets, but RR seed can be difficult to find and I am not sure I want a plot dedicated to just beets. I look forward to seeing how they progress and how the deer react to them.

Yes seed can be difficult to find. Been planting beets for many years. Deer have always browsed/fed heavily on the beets including the first year. I've been planting 2-3 acres of beets and in the spring I can't find the remains of a single beet. A previous thread on sugar beet shows how hard the deer hit my sugar beets. (see thread Deer love sugar beets)

Where can you find the RR sugar beet seed? I deal with co-ops and farm stores throughout the mid-Atlantic and no one has been able to find seed for me.

Would be interesting to see a side by side plot of sugarbeet against a more typical Dbltree brassica mix. Use would probably look different on each day. Or maybe not.

I planted SB this year and will be planting a mix of PTT and GFR right beside them next week. I hear so much about the SB so I had to give them a shot. I planted a little later than normal, June 20, but I’m anxious to see how deer react to them. I don’t like the fact that I had to plant so early, but you have to with them to get a good tuber. I will let you people know. I only got an acre of the Beets tho.

Nitro, what did you use for preemergent and your weed control in general?

Weed control is quite simple. Planted into field that had RR soybeans previous year, clean field, few weeds then - Roundup, lucky enough to have RR sugar beets. Can find out from beet farmers what they use when using non RR sugar beets if people here would like that.

I have planted a mix before and was hard to tell if anything was being used. This year I just planted 3 plots near beets, rape, turnips, & radishes. ( individual plots, side by side)

As I understand it Nitro - you spray roundup when the sugar beets emerge to 3" - 4" and your ATV sprayer doesn't really harm them much at that height. Do you also go over them to top-dress Urea a few weeks after emergence or do you give them all the fertilizer they need at planting? How much fertilizer to you generally apply?

Thanks for the tips.

You're on track with height of beets for spraying unless the weeds are getting to tall,. When the weeds hit 2-3 inches tall is when to spray. Roundup seems to do the job better when weeds are smaller and growing fast. Beets hate competition of any kind.
Fertilizer is applied all at once in spring. The reason is, I broadcast the seed and no rows to follow when beets are taller, I would crush to many even with the 4 wheeler. I fertilize according to soil sample, with some extra urea.

Which is a good way to go about it anyway. It is my understanding that you want to starve them of N toward the end of the season. Reason being, it increases the sugar content.

I believe this is beet specific and not true for brassicas in general.
