I am close to 59 now and married with 4 adult kids my beagle and my wife's blood trailing dachshund. Hunting and shooting have been my main interest since getting a Daisy BB gun for Christmas at age 6. Watched the QDMA forums for a few years and learned much but hesitated to join because of the animosity generated by a few characters. All the good people seem to have migrated here and I really appreciate the great atmosphere the moderators and members have created. Grew up in rural SW Michigan and moved to the Kansas City area shortly after high school. In 1981 started hunting the area where my wife and I now own land in Putnam County, MO. In 2006 we were fortunate to be able to buy 163 acres that I had hunted many times and two years ago had an Amish friend construct a pole barn style building with living quarters and garage. Our latest project this summer was building a backyard shooting range. Our place is 85% wooded with about 25% of that being very rugged old overgrown strip pits that make an excellent sanctuary. We don't own a tractor yet so our small food plots are clover, brassicas and grains. We have done some hinge cutting, vision barriers, tree planting and funneling and don't see the projects ever ending. I am not real internet or computer savvy and don't have a tablet or smart phone but I figure I will learn some of that along with the habitat knowledge. Thanks for creating this great forum.

Welcome aboard. We must be neighbors. Putnam county, strip mines. That's my back yard! Heck when I bought the place we had to have to coal rights clause removed because the company is now defunct.

Nothing has been posted here for a while so I thought I would give my 2 cents. Live in Michigan close to Lake Michigan about half way up the lower peninsula. I'm a retired teacher. Taught special education for 29 years. I'm married to a wonderful country gal (bring home a deer and she'll start the butchering). Love it here and I look forward to the winter each year. The only bad thing about winter is that all the hard work cutting firewood in the off season goes up in smoke. Nice stacked rows of wood disappear. I hunt on 40 acres of property that we own. Never got a buck out there yet, haven't had it very long, but an older doe fills the freezer. Oh I've seen the bucks but too young to shoot. I'm new to this site and I joined on Dec 18th. Was doing some research on trail cameras and happen to come across a thread on Habitat Talk. Read some of the other threads and was hooked by the knowledge from the people here. I know I can learn a lot here. Not much into posting but with a little practice, like this one, I think I can feel more comfortable posting. I could write a heck of a lot more here but don't want to bore ya so with that I'm glad that I hit on this website and I am interested in what others post.

Welcome aboard kfab12. This is a pretty cool forum with many good folks on here. I've learned a ton since getting on here after lurking & reading other guys' posts for a while. I think I pick up new info & tips every time I read the posts on here. I try to share what I've learned from others on here and also from foresters and professors at several universities. We all gain here, I think. Thanks for sharing your story. Please keep us posted on your habitat work & hunting/fishing !!

Howdy Mr. North Mo! As message boards go, this is one of the finest! I can't imagine where you might uncover more expert guidance on wildlife habitat improvement and the toys associated with the habit(tat) than you will here. It's a great group. And, while we have our necessary differences from time-to-time, I'm sure you will feel an overwhelming comradery! I still think granular lime is......well, never mind! Have a Merry Christmas! I live in east central Kansas. I bought 33.5 acres that is my slice of heaven. Shot a 163” whitetail last year as my first ever deer. I love the habitat work. I’ve been planting food plots, restoring native grass, planting shrubs/trees, and utilizing prescribed fire. We also built a pond but we really need rain. I don’t consider it a good day off work if I am not burning through a couple tanks in the chainsaw. All the work is paying off with 2 coveys of quail present this year, and another nice buck down this fall. I love watching the transformation.

Welcome to the forum
Been to Wichita a few times on work related projects and can definitely see some nice habitat around the Arkansas and Walnut river drainage areas. Lots of green fields this time of year that I assume must be winter wheat too.
North Central KS lurker here. 55 years old. I have been perusing and stealing ideas from the habitat forums for 5 or 6 years. This information was applied to 80 acres I bought. This is my labor of love/fitness program = food plots, hinge cutting bedding areas, NWSG, and planting several thousand trees/shrubs (my local farmer friends think I'm nuts). Unbelievable the amount of satisfaction I get from implementing an idea and seeing it work. Took my first deer off there last year and another nice buck this year. Trying to pay it forward for the next generation. So glad to find this forum!

Got serious about habitat in the early 2000s, have gone to some boot camps, used a consultant or two and read all the books and blogs a small minded guy with big book shelves could expose himself too.
Have lurked on here for a few years. Keeping the family farm ever evolving and even toy w a few small properties because..... why not? Have a couple kiddos that help a bit and a bunch of buddies through out the US that share the addiction.
Glad to be onboard...formally.
