Off topic for habitat growing but interesting. From the NAFEX facebook page. A grower in far east Russia with -40 C and colder winters grows sweet cherries, peaches, and zone 5 & 6 apples. The trees are planted horizontally in a bank and grow out through a retaining wall. The tops are covered with snow in the winter for insulation.

Also had a good thread the other day on pears growing in zone 2 & 3 in Russia and Canada. If your on facebook look up the NAFEX (North American Fruit Explorers) page. Sometimes has some interesting reading.
 
That's pretty cool. I wonder how they came up with that?

The holes in the wall don't look very big, but may growing horizontally they don't need to be?
