I'm thinking maybe woodpecker or sapsucker, but it looks so carefully made. What do you all think? thanks.

I'm guessing its not your first time out tapping maple trees, right?? lol so....................12 gauge slug..... or just a woodpecker. Woodpecker is my bet, keeping it simple.

Is it squared off some? Pileated wood peckers are known to make square holes.

Woodpecker. Probably pileated.

Agree with the pileated woodpecker answer. I have dead trees on my land that have piles of wood chips at their bases due to the work of the wood peckers.

It is amazing how those woodpeckers know when there is a hollow spot in an otherwise perfectly healthy looking tree!
