What Habitat Work Did You Do Today?

Cleaned out my dad’s wood duck houses yesterday and burned some switch. It was a perfect night but its damp enough that I didn’t get a complete burn once I lost the little bit of wind I had.

Hoping to get my native grasses burned today. I have a little 4 acre patch that was in a program but they are cutting a lot of small pieces in my area. My neighbor is doing beans in an adjoining field so we will do beans this summer and next spring I am going to re-design it with plots and switch screens. Works out great, I’d rather not spray a patch that big.

I also decided not to do my rr alfalfa this spring. That little patch is getting corn and I’ll go behind that with alfalfa and oats this fall.

Opened the gate to drain the duck impoundment. Still about 75 blue wing on it and a handful of other ducks but it’s getting late and it’s needs to dry out to spray and plant

Also sprayed about 9 acres. Cleaned up some with clover with Cleth and 2-4db and the rest was a burndown. It’s so hot and dry. I feel like what use to be planted in May now needs to be planted in april

Picked up 3 full grown beautyberry shrubs off of marketplace yesterday. Just had to dig them out of the lady's yard for $5 each. She said they were selling the same size or smaller at Lowe's for $40 each. I'll have to find a place to plant them now too.

Sprayed to kill out 6 acres of cool season pasture that we burned a few weeks ago. I will reseed it next week into NWSG heavy on the forbs.

Wow! Cool. I bet you have some fun duck hunts!

Planting starts today! Yipeee! Planting about 50 acres of summer annuals plus 20 acres of joint vetch and an 11 acre sunflower field. Big fun.

The summer annual mix:
30 lbs cow peas
10 lbs lab lab
10 lbs mung beans
10 lbs sunflower
10 lbs buck wheat
3 lbs okra
2 lbs sunn hemp

Notice no grasses. Still transitioning from impact of grazing cattle and want to be able to spray cleth if grass becomes a problem. I worked with Green Cover Seed and had them custom mix and coat with bio logics for me. Lastly am working with Soil Pro to " inoculate" the soil organically with biologicals designed from soil tests I sent them. Been excited to get this going for a while.

That is a great mix!!!

I watered my 25 apple grafts I planted in the field last November from pots. This is the driest April I can remember in my life. Farmers planting corn in the area looks like a dust storm. Probably only 10% of me deer vetch came up that I planted three weeks ago.

I wouldn’t stress about that vetch yet. It takes forever to get established and once it does, it goes crazy. Honestly, it’s a little early for it. I was planning on planting mine in about two weeks.
