What Habitat Work Did You Do Today?

Got out and cut some aspen on a timber edge today, did some crop tree release on some young oaks as well. Beautiful day for it, ran the saw for about 3 hours, forgot how much work it is! My forearms will be sore tomorrow!
Walked by this edge feathering a week later (today) and there was noticeable browse on the aspen tips however the green ash I cut (dying from EAB) was crushed. Almost every ash tip within deer's reach was missing, probably 50% of the Aspen tips were gone.

Something to take notice of and definitely worth cutting dow the rest of my dying ash before they fully succumb to the dirty bug.

I haven't been doing any habitat work. I've been busy making stuff in the kitchen while winter rolls on. I did get to the cabin over the weekend and things looked really good. Snow isn't bad at all right now. There's a storm coming tomorrow night though. Quite a bit of puff over it. We'll see what happens.

So far this winter, I've restarted efforts at making organic, whole wheat, ancient heirloom einkorn bread from scratch. I made 3 batches of soap, seeking that perfect single bar for every purpose. And I recently discovered fermenting vegetables.

After reading up on it and the benefits of countertop salt fermentation, I'm sold on it. A buddy showed it to me and had me try his. Oh boy, talk about jump starting your guts in a good way. Those veggies are loaded with natural probiotics and prebiotics that can make it all the way into your digestive tract to get things humming like before the advent of processed and nutrient devoid foods. It is so cheap an easy, it's a $100/hr job you can do at home vs buying this stuff and the snooty falooty store.

Pruned the rest of my peaches and started on the muscadines

Planted 30 Dunstan chestnut trees and have 20 hazelnut shrubs coming. Never thought of hazelnuts before but apparently they will grown down here??? Time will tell

Finished pruning apple and pear trees today. Walked neighboring farm with permission after he hinted putting it up for sale, I may make an offer.

That’s exciting! Love buying neighbors. How big?

He owns 200 acres, 100 acres of woods and 100 acres of mixed cow pasture and woods. I am going to offer to buy 100 acres of woods and offer to pay for the survey to separate from the pasture. We will see

That sounds like gut bomb to me but probably better than the wild mushrooms I once heard of someone sampling. ;)

I eat a raw oatmeal, walnut, fruit, mixture for breakfast, top dressed with a few Cheerios.

So far just rain from the storm.

A fellow deer hunter came over on Monday and we gathered some scion for him.

Did some TSI yesterday. I wussed out and didn’t do as much as I wanted to do but at least I got a few hours in. I read about how important sunlight to the ground is for deer and turkeys and I hope that the time/energy/effort I am committing will be helpful. It gets me outside and keeps me moving and seems to be good for my mental health if nothing else. Next time I will try to go harder.

Sunday I started pruning apple trees that were in the yard, then was planning on going to the Apple orchard and pruning more, and bringing fences in tighter. Over a foot of snow on the ground yet, and I didn’t want to get the SXS stuck, so that will be another day.

Finally got around to beginning pruning (feels a little late but it's been a really cold winter). Only got to my pears (8) but figured I would start there as they usually pop alot earlier than the crabs/apples. Was able to collect some scion, which is good because I am doing a ton of pear grafting this year. Hoping to hop on the 2027 Scion Exchange next year...hopefully will be looking for some persimmon wood!

More forest stand improvement (FSI) work today. Got after it. Saw lots of deer tracks in the snow. Killed some invasive multiflora rose and some oriental (or round leaf or whatever) bitter sweet vines. Got a lot done and was beat afterwards. Getting a lot of sunlight to the ground for Forbs and for more deer food. Left a few stumps untreated (mineral stumps) and also cut down some maples for deer to eat now to hopefully survive the winter. A good day overall and it was really nice out. Sunny, no wind, high 30's.

Where are you located?

I received ANOTHER box of 50 moisture mats and 500 more ground stakes. $200 here, $200 there… Pretty soon you’re talking about real money! Habitat work is not for the faint of heart.

Frost seeded some RC Bigrock Switchgrass today and this past weekend. I’m thinking I’ll try spring planting some this year also and see how the two compare. Excited to get more cover going for deer and pheasants. Hoping this helps with deer bedding on my property some.
Might do some chainsaw work this weekend around the edges of my CRP to reduce raptor perch trees and potential woody encroachment.
