What Habitat Work Did You Do Today?

It warmed up to -8. I took a 5 foot pole from my old pruning saw and knocked apples off of Red Splendor, Golden Hornet, and Dolgo for the deer.

I need to get outback and knock some apples off of the Buckman Crab and a few other trees. My corn plot fuel gauge must be near empty!

Got out and cut some aspen on a timber edge today, did some crop tree release on some young oaks as well. Beautiful day for it, ran the saw for about 3 hours, forgot how much work it is! My forearms will be sore tomorrow!

Fixed the chipper. Sat for too long and needs a new carburetor

Sowed clover on snow last week. This week I have been pruning apple and pear trees and collecting scions.
Getting the itch here but it’s gonna be a couple weeks for the frost seeding at least..I force myself to not order seed before March so I physically can’t go spread it way too early..gotta get on that pruning and scion collecting though…

I’ve backed off some lately as our rut is just starting to heat up and our season goes through February 10th. I have planted and tubed 105 oaks, 72 Chickasaw plum and 5 southern crab this winter. I have 10 prairie crab and 5 mulberry coming this week. I’ve also done some winter strip disking of about 10 acres of old field. I have quite a bit of TSI to do but not sure I will get to it this year as I have another 100 Chickasaw seedlings coming in March and I have 50 ozark chinquapin stratifying in the fridge that I will have to deal with soon.
Where are you sourcing the Chickasaw plums? I need a 100 or so.

Saturday I planted a few Arkansas Chinkapin Oaks, SWO, and chestnuts. Put fresh batteries in cameras and moved them to the primary logging roads to inventory predators and hopefully some turkeys that should start showing back up soon. I looked for sheds for a while also with no luck.

I continue to survey the logging slash and cleanup I need to do in certain areas. A couple culverts I need to put in and clean up the roads also.

I saw 10-12 hogs. A major issue that I am learning I will probably just have to live with forever.

If you have hogs, make he most of them. Buy a thermal scope

I put pollen patties in the beehives yesterday. Pruned about a third of the trees in the orchard today

The recent batch of Chickasaw that I ordered are coming from Virginia State Nursery. They are seedlings but are cheap and I just ordered another 100 a week or so ago and they had plenty left. Can’t speak for the quality, but at a little over $1 a seedling, it’s worth a shot. I’m planting 200 unprotected and just hoping for a decent survival rate. They won’t be in a heavy browse area.
