What do you use to label your trees ?

Something simple, but just wanted to get an idea of what you people use to label your trees. A lot of my tags are fading due to the weather. I like to keep them all labeled so years later I know the variety and how old. I know I can make a map at home, but I would rather have a tag to keep outside on my cage that stands up to the weather. Any input would be great.

Aluminum tree tags are what I use, cheap and last forever.

Buck- are you talking about the name plates they put on the front of trophys ?

Thx

I got mine from Gemplers, work great, write on them with a pen and comes with tie wire

I got tags like buck showed. I thought about stamping them but ended up with a vibro scribe. Not as nice and my writing can be bad but faster than stamping all the info I want.

I use a round version of these. For larger trees, I thread an 11" cable tie through the hole. The tag slides down the tie but is stopped by the grip at the other end. I then staple the tie to the tree. The tree grows around the staple and works its way down the tie toward the tag. It takes many years for a tree to grow enough to require a replacement of the tie.

I don't use the cheap harbor freight ties for this. I use the higher quality UV resistant ties.

Thanks,

Jack

I've been using the write on aluminum tags, not a fan. They do okay for awhile, but they certainly aren't "permanent." I've replaced a number of them that were becoming illegible or that the deer chewed up.

I need to go with something like what bv posted and then use hammer and letter stencils

Not sure the style you have used, but I have aluminum tags that hold an impression in the metal, not ink.

Very, very good given the conditions over last 10 years ...

I think the cheapest solution is a piece of vinyl siding, cut to the size of a label (1" x 3" or so) and written on with a pencil. Don't use a sharpie, it will fade.

I've had them last longer than I've been planting stuff.

aluminum cans
cut up an fold them into a thick rigid piece with silver side out
engrave tree variety an root stock with pocket knife
Drill hole an use scrap copper wire to attach
Somthing to do around camp fire

Smart. Sounds like a great idea. I'm going to try this. I better get started emptying some cans.

Staple the edges of the aluminum together after doubling it. Deer occasionally chew on these and make them unidentifiable.

That's the style I've used. The wind doesn't blow there like the wind blows here. Those tags flapping in the wind, hitting the cages, hitting trees limbs...the writing becomes illegible. Deer also seem to enjoy chewing on the damn things (I'm sure it's a curiosity thing). I've got some that have been turned into little "balls" of metal.

Why'd you move there again? :)

I bought some aluminum flashing at HD and cut a batch with tin snips. Stacked about 3 doz. of them together and drilled holes thru all at the same time. I put the apple variety, rootstock and year planted on the tags with an engraver. Tie them on with 12 gauge copper wire to the cages. Flashing material is cheap, I have gobs of copper wire and the engraver - they'll be good for 30 years. I also have a back-up map and list of locations around the property. I think I have about $7 in the material, and I still have a lot left.

Cut a white plastic milk jug up...White, like Lactaid jugs....write on them with pencil...last forever.

I plan to use pieces of scrap vinyl siding and write on them with perm marker. Drill 2 holes in corner to hang on my remesh and put them on the north side for less sunlight fading the marker.

Also for backup, I will have a CAD drawing of some sort showing the order and placement of each tree in case something happens to my labels.

I recommend a pencil rather than a marker. The marker will fade in a season or two. The pencil will last forever.

WOW! Maybe it is a vitamin deficiency ...

I agree the wind and flapping tag is an issue. I have used rubber bands to secure the loose end but these degrade in the weather & sun.

Would be nice if the aluminum tags had a hole on each end for securing.
