What causes this?

This is a pear tree in NC. I have about a dozen others that look fine. This tree is about 4 years old. I planted it as 3 gal tree from the wildlife group.

You will want to remove those branches infected by FB while the tree is dormant this winter.

I agree with FB. When you see completely dead limbs on a pear tree it usually means fireblight. In the spring, it would have been even more apparent.

Wildlife Group is good about telling buyers the amount of FB resistance in the varieties they sell. Some are bulletproof and others have varying levels of resistance. The ones that I have bought have given me confidence in their assessments. What variety is that one?

I am pretty sure this is a kiefer pear.

To follow up on Turkey creeks comment. Do I just prune out those once the tree is dormant? Thanks for the help.

You can wait until winter to prune but if it was me I would prune now while it is easily identified. Be sure and remove all the brown limbs and leaves out of the area. it would be best to burn all this debris to keep it from spreading next spring.

I had 6 trophy pears from Morse and they produced loads of pears 2nd year then got FB.Didn't produce next 2 years so they got cut down and replaced
