Are mergansers fish ducks and not good to eat?

Exactly. I made the mistake of killing one, once, and it was painful to taste. Even with all the crap I tried to smother it with.

I ate a hoodie once. Wasn’t bad at all. Now, buffleheads, puke. 🤮

I don't really care for them; they are minnow eaters. The drakes sure are pretty especially the hoodeds, make nice mounts and are very good to train young dogs they put out a lot of scent.

The others I don't care to eat are buffleheads, golden eyes, and sea ducks, they all eat snails and clams. I know up around Cleveland guys shoot a lot of mergansers because it's all they have to shoot hunting the breaker walls...same with some areas on the east coast guys will shoot the hell out of scoters because they love waterfowling but it's all they have..so they learn how to cook them and must develop a taste for them.
Ducks are what they eat...mallards feeding in corn fields or Canvasbacks on wild rice are about as good of eating as there is. Although I have shot mallards and blackducks in Jersey and they tasted awful like the black mucky swamp mud they live in....I think every duck will feed on minnows or dead shad at some point, I just hope I don't shoot those!

Went the last two mornings and saw +/- 30 geese both days and never pulled the trigger hoping for some late ducks. Never happened. May have to try for a jerkey deer soon.

That’s funny swamp! He is white as snow with no war paint for sure.

That thing is massive. The goldeneyes I use to shoot in Colorado were half that size

Wow nice!

Were they targeting goldeneyes? That looks like a GE decoy behind him.

Not duck hunter - didn't realize the things you mentioned. I ate some duck years ago - don't know what kind it was - someone else shot it & cooked it. As I recall, it was pretty good. What about woodies for taste??

Woodies are great, they stay pretty clean.

I'm not sure, I know there are some GE around. He keeps some decoys in the blind for them...they are way more decoy specific than most ducks.

Good lord. At one time ducks were my life. Lots of fond memories. Enjoy these times boys. Lots of good times.
Same. Big blinds, big spreads, big waves, no sleep on the Mississippi River. My god i miss the days of 50-60 corn feeders hanging over the decoys.
