Warm weather effects

I was working in the Gala's Sunday and they were still pretty dormant/bud swell, all but one part of one tree. There was about 100 buds that were at silver tip. Weird!

We are under 24 inches of snow here at my house and about 15 inches at my cabin. Still snowing here omg. I don't think I will be grilling tonight but I did last night. My jacuzzi is there on the left. You can see how high the snow is on the gas grill
 
I decided I had to shovel around my backyard trees. About 26" and still snowing. Didn't want any rabbits working the tops.
 
This sucks. Any shot at an early spring is gone now. I still had a foot of rock hard snow on the ground before this storm. I am in the 24-30" range so it will be here well into April unless we get a lot of rain in the next two weeks.
 
Ouch... those buds aren't going to like temps in the low teens H20. I guess a lot will depend how long it stays that cold, but ya gotta think there will be some damage.
 
Yea, this storm is definitely a kick in the nuts! I am thinking we will be back on track in a week or two as temps will be back in the 40's here starting Friday. May take awhile to melt this much snow though. I have 700 Norways coming in 2 weeks so this snow needs to go! Hoping we have at least some apples this year after this crazy weather.

You got us beat, I think I got around 18" from the storm. We had some dry air come in from the south in the afternoon, so that helped. Around 4-6 PM it wasn't snowing much right here, but it was snowing hard east and west of us.

No other trees, just that one part of one tree in the Galas had some silver tip showing, everything else is still dormant/bud swell. Everything looks good so far. We got down in the low to mid single digits a few mornings this week, but nothing to worry about at this bud stage.

It looks like our long range forecast is great. Not to cold or hot. Not seeing any problems at all for the next couple weeks, but that can change I guess.
 
Maya, you better tag that Gala and watch it. Could be the next fast selling Gala sport.

LOL Not sure anyone would want a tree that is more susceptible to spring freeze damage. I did find out something last year I did not know in regards to Gala. They are the best apples for diabetics. I had a customer at a farmers market buying them each week and she told me why. So its now a bit of a selling point. This woman told some others and we ended up getting a good little following for them at the market and our roadside stand. They are a pain in the backside to pick though. They don't exactly fall off the tree.
 
Now I'm curious as to what makes Gala the best apple for diabetics, care to explain?
 
lower glycemic index, I believe, as compared to other apples. They also generally size smaller, so you don't have to cut and store haves or whatever.

I was at my hunting land in NW Wisconsin yesterday, and I was pleased to see none of the trees were budding yet. So that helps with my fears of an early warm up, and frost killing the chance for apples. In fact, everything was pretty brown yet. No fresh growth on winter rye, and nothing on the clover plot yet either. Everything was brown.

During our adventure, we kicked up 4 deer that were bedding. It's nice to see that my land work is helping with making deer comfortable enough to bed on it. Big improvement from years past.
