Violi’s hanging crab vs. Hyslop Crab

Wny Hunter

A good 3 year old buck
I am trying to find some info on pollination partners and having a hard time. I have just enough space to plant two trees near my cabin. I’m trying to decide which one would be a better pollination partner with a Freedom apple tree. I would like to plant the freedom with either the Violi or Hyslop. All were ordered from SNL last year and are sitting in 7 gallon root trapper bags in the back yard of residence. Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Hyslop and Freedom are mid-season bloom varieties.

Hyslop is sold by some nurseries as a pollinator crab. We have 2 and they bloom and produce apples every year for us. They DO get very dry and mealy quickly. If you want to eat any Hyslop, you have to watch carefully and time it just right for good eating. They turn dark red and look really good, but I've tried a few and I missed the peak of ripeness. They were DRY and pretty tasteless. But they bloom really well. I wouldn't say they're a good deer crab fruit-wise - too quick to dry out.

Thanx for replies
