Tristar Shotgun?

Catscratch

5 year old buck +
Was in the gun shop yesterday and picked up a Tristar Viper Silver in 28 gauge.

Weighs 5.2lbs and shouldered perfectly every time I touched it. Fell in love with it's feel instantly.

Anyone have a reason to not get it?

Or a recommendation for something else that is very similar?

Cant speak to the gun itself, ammo is little on the pricey side if you plan to shoot it much. Ever shot a Benelli Montefeltro? I have a 20 gauge that I bought probably 10 years ago. I don't like the looks of the new receiver style since 2023 and unless you want to take out a 2nd mortgage I wouldn't be looking to buy a new one anyhow. Absolutely love that gun and it would be one of the last ones I would sell. Light weight and points and shoots like a dream. My 2 oldest kids shot it and never once said a thing about recoil. My buddy bought one off a trade with another guy and he said I needed to shoot it. Within a week after shooting it I had one off Gun Broker getting shipped to my local gun dealer! 20 gauge ammo is much easier to come by and a lot cheaper.

Ya, I'm worried about the ammo thing. I'd probably shoot 10ish boxes a year at doves with it. I'll pick up a 100 pack from Walmart once a month or so and throw it in storage. One boy shoots 12 gauge, the other shoots 20. I've been shooting 12 for a while now. It's nice to have an extra box in case the one boy runs out. Doesn't make a lot of sense to throw in a 3rd round that isn't interchangeable.

There was a 20 gauge sitting next to it. Picked it up and didn't love it. Internet says it's 1lb heavier than the 28. I could tell the difference in wt immediately.

Have not shot the Montefeltro. From the outside looking it they seem like very similar guns. Can't go wrong with a Benelli!

Just checked Armslist. The Montefeltro is double the Tristar. Effectively knocks it out of my current price range. But, I'll ask my gun guy if he can source one cheaper. He's always got an inside link.

Well if you hold off on buying a new shotgun for awhile, I will try and set up something to bring it along for a ride down to Coffeyville. I would still like a tour of Catscratch Dream Farm. I would let you shoot it. The daughter will probably be at CCC through the Spring semester. She said I need to come down for a visit outside of volleyball to hang with her for a day. Christmas tree season is in full swing and then she will be home for Christmas break so it wont be until after the new year starts.

Look on Gun Broker, not sure if it is the same website it used to be, but that is where I picked mine up. I think I gave around $800 for mine, it was used but looked like new.

You are welcome to stop by any time you want! Bring fishing poles if you come in the spring.

I intended to watch some local college volleyball this fall but was too caught up with other stuff.

Cabela's has plenty of 28 gauge ammo, especially if you don't mind shooting lead. Other metals can be hard to find.

You said it, shouldered perfectly every time..........

I don't shoot trap n skeet like I used to. But, skeet folks enjoyed their 28 gauges. IF your quick on birds, it can do ok in trap. But, it is lacking there.

Was a grouse n pheasant shooter. I don't think I ever pulled a trigger on a dove once.... You can get 25 yards on a bird when you fire, you should be good.

TriStar is made in turkey. However, anyone I know with a TriStar did not have problems.

I'm a 20ga person myself. got both 870 and 500's. Would probably buy a Beretta autoloader in 20 if I hit trap n skeet much again. Deer ticks pretty much stopped my bird hunting interest. Still pop a grouse here n there at camp.
