Trees orders?

Speaking of roots. You guy soak your trees in water before planting? I usuallu don't unless they look particuarly dry. I keep an extra bag or tarp to keep them out of the sun and wind while planting.

I always do, I keep a 5 gal bucket of water with me, put 2-3 plants in bucket, dig holes and when I pull one out of bucket I place a new one in. I’m 47/48 with bare root so far. Keeping my fingers crossed the luck continues.

I don't put in bucket of water, but I do take care to keep roots wet. Every time I take a tree from the bag a mist the roots of all the trees with a spray bottle, only takes seconds and seems to work good.

Looks to have a lot of burr Knots

MM111 has them too, and it has been an incredible rootstock for me. I always just cover with dirt and have never had a single issue. I would rather have burr knots than a tree falling over the hill and/or going down in a wind storm.

Agreed. ^ ^ ^ ^ MM-111 is also recommended by Penn State as a good rootstock for anchoring, especially in heavier, clayish soil. No problems at all with any of our MM-111 trees.

Well I planned to terminate my final remaining rootstocks (failed grafts) from the garden, but couldn't bring myself to do it. So today I went and trimmed scions from what was my cleanest and best looking apples last year, a Liberty. Hoping for 5/5 Liberty trees next year. It's supposed to become an asparagus bed in a week, but I'll work around that.

Had to find the old video for inspiration. Been a couple years. Didn't have any room for rust.

I always do. I won't plant them not unless they have been soaking for atleast 12 hours. I like 24 hours if I have the time. I think it helps tremendously and buys me some time before it rains. I never water my trees in.

M111's and some M7's seem to be good so far at home in heavy clay. Anybody try other rootstocks in sandy soil like m111's? Got to say anty from whitetail crabs and SLN has been good so far at camp. Dolgo has only been in the ground since august 2024. Too soon to say anything about that type.

I’m planting in sand and B118, Antonovka, and a few Dolgo have all done well so far. Just planted some M7 but too early to say there. I know a lot of people like M111, the one year I ordered and grafted they all died, maybe just a fluke but it was not a good experience for me.
Quite a bit of frost yet here in northern WI, just tried to get at my grafted trees in buckets that are buried in the garden, completely solid yet.

Will say whitetail crabs grow very well in my sandy loam. Think some of theirs are on dolgo? Whatever it is they do well.

Anty from SLN just kinda plod along whether on sandy loam at land or clay at home. All have lived and grow but slow compared to crabapple seedlings and rootstocks like dolgo or ranetka

I never have. Just bring a few milk jugs filled with water . When I take a tree out of the plastic I wet the roots , and wet the rest of the trees in the plastic and cover them over again and try to keep them in the shade. I like the idea of a tarp...I'll try that when I plant this year.

How long have your Anty trees been in the ground?? All our Anty trees started slow too, but when they kicked off about year 4 & 5, they shot up big-time. Zone 5 / 6 border in clayish loam soil here.

I go back and forth on root soaking. I think if you are planting fully dormant bare root stock into moist soil, it shouldn't matter. I would be a little nervous if the soil is abnormally dry, though. I feel like soaking might actually speed up the breaking of dormancy. If that happens and the dry conditions persist, you might get some seedlings that dry out faster than if they were just planted into the dry soil and waiting for rain.

Of course, if you are able to water the trees immediately after planting I don't think the above is relevant and soaking would be preferred.

When I was doing my large plantings in the spring I was using a mycorrhizal root dip idk if it helped but it was a minimal cost for the hundreds of trees I was planting so I used it.

I use this when I'm planting my BH bareroot trees. It believe it helps. We've had significant droughts the last two summers, and we haven't lost any trees due to drought.

I also mix in some granular Lesco CarbonPro G, which is biochar based. (50 lb bag per roughly 15 trees)

How is your success rate? If the soil is wet and the roots are wet it would make sense that they do not need to be watered in. Aside from helping with air pockets I guess.

I have had a 100% success rate. My soil is pretty sandy. I just started taking notes on my planting methods a couple years ago. But in 2023 I planted 14 trees and only watered one time in June. Last year I planted 16 trees and they never got watered once. I use a dewitt 5oz weed mat, 2 tablespoons of water crystals, then stone on top.
