Trees orders?

Is mehrabyan nursery pretty good? I ordered some rootstock from them a few weeks ago. Hoping they're decent. Suppose to be delivered in a week or two.

3rd year with them. Been happy so far. Apple tree bareroots have been good sized, and you know what theyre on. Rootstocks have been good too. Antonovka and M111 looked good both years. Trying a few B118's this year.

You could have a pretty nice looking hunting spot with the varieties they offer. redfree, sweet 16, and olympic pear bareroots coming. Liberty and enterprise for a coworker. Shipping had been fair. A few smaller branches have been broken on last years order, but overall they looked good. MAny put on 3ft of growth the past year, but I water them way better than most because its my backyard. All his trees put on good growth, every rootstock grew well too. Although had a dud graft or two.

I started with a dozen or so rootstocks and shipping was only $18. Tempting to add a franklin cider or two on B118. Giving a few a go this year at camp. Might dig up a dolgo at home on B118 too

Done with fruit trees for the year. Got 17 in. 12 from the nursery and 5 from BH. Started a 4th orchard. Not sure what all came out of the nursery, but if I grafted them I must've wanted them at some point. Not a fan of digging them out of heavy soil. Missouri gravel bed would be real interesting if I was just starting out in this. Each tree gets 5 gallons of rock. Wish it was more, but it seems to work ok.

Yep. No pain-no strain-no corrosion. I use #12 gauge solid wire. Lasts for years - ours at 12 years now on our cages.

Good luck with your plantings, Mort!!
I get as much copper wire as I need; even enough to share with a buddy, by befriending an electrician who "wires" new houses for a contractor. When he wires new construction, he throws scraps - of various lengths - often 5-6'+ into a box - and sends me a text concerning when he will finish. I go by at their quitting time or pick it up later in the evening - under material in back of dumpster. Earns him 4-5 rolls of sausage each year.
The yellow wire is the best ... contains multiple copper wires of different sizes.

@Mortenson is that limestone you put around your trees? A local place has 17a limestone and 6a river rock for pretty cheap. Need to pick a yard up next week and not sure which one I should get.

Yes it is. We get it with fines, so when I scoop buckets of it I try to grab spots with clean stone and spots with fines for a blend. This is from the quarry at Lowell. Makes real nice ag lime.

5 gallons with a mat that big is just fine. I have hundreds of voles and easily see 10+ rabbits out back every evening. Every pruning cut is nibbled clean. Zero problems with voles or rabbits with that much stone. I prefer coarse edge stone. Something they dont want to rip their paws on.

Debating the wire screen. I use 2x4 48" fencing, not the 4x4 cattle / concrete panels. My 1st year I used 2ft tall 1/4" mesh laying loosely around the tree, not dug in. No problems at all. A member had a tree girdled by the window screen. Got plenty of 1/4" mesh around. Thinking of pulling them all out and going loose like the 1st year. Maybe just lifting them out of the ground and letting them go loose. This is for trees at home, bases well cleaned up with 2-3 roundup sprays.

Last year I had a rabbit stuck in the cage. Saw him all afternoon there. Evening time saw him again. A little wigglin he got out. MY mesh is 4 inch high and 2 inch wide.

Kinda wished I got bluehill instead of saint lawrence this year. Really want some turning point at camp. Got the bug for violi's and winter wildlife so order from there. Probably turning point originated about 35 miles west of my spot.

I think i could get away with not using stone and probably window screen if I wanted to. We have a good population of bobcat and coyotes. I have only seen 1 rabbit on my property in the 30+ years I have been going there.. And that was on trail cam at night a few years ago. Never have seen any voles either. But I'm not taking any chances and protect my trees like I should lol I do use the flexguard tree wraps now and like them.

The stone also helps keep the landscape fabric from deteriorating sooner. I agree about not taking any chances. Good amount of money and sweat equity per tree, what's a little more for a piece of screen? Girdle only has to happen once.

Definitely a lot of work and money! I believe each tree cost me around $55-$60ish per tree by the time I cage and weed mat. Not worth the risk to leave them unprotected.

What rootstock is that monster?

Money is one thing, time is another. They get wrecked in a year or two, or not put in right and grow slow. You plant trees, the deer make a trail to them.

Dolgo from Blue Hill.
Yours has a lot more roots then most of the trees I got from him last year. Majority of mine looked like this.

The pear I got from him was similar to yours.
I do feel like this tree took off a little slower then some others that had better looking roots. But a lot more factors into that and not all of my trees are planted in the exact same area.

Place do water, but 2 summers ago was pretty dry compared to last year.

This is the roots on the seedling persimmons.
