Too late to prune ?

Found some abandoned apple trees this past weekend I wouldn't mind starting to give a little TLC. In Mid Michigan, buds swollen, but no signs of leaves. Can I prune yet this week ?

I would cut the dead stuff and wait until July to cut the water sprouts.
