Summer Granny is in full bloom today, and most of my other trees are not far behind.

No freezing forecasted in the near future. Coldest night in 15 day forecast is 35 degrees. Might be a good year.

It is generally loaded every year. They are a large green apple that tastes like Granny Smith but ripen mid summer. In size they are just a little smaller than a Horse - maybe about the size of a big Black Limbertwig.

The fate of this tree is unknown at the moment. It is just outside the R/W fence (and construction limits) for the new road but on property that the Highway Department now owns. I took a bunch of scions off of it this spring. I'm going to top work it into some other trees and DLH is grafting some on B118, so we have it saved. I also have a small root sprout off of it from last spring that lived, and someone else has another nicer root sprout. Actually, that particular tree was started from a root sprout about 40 years ago from an original tree that was dead center of the new road.

I've never seen even a hint of any disease on that tree. It's a keeper.

My first attempt at apples years ago fed some voles over the winter so I swore them off.

Three years ago I planted one Keiffer pear to try fruit again. Looked today and its dead...
Looks like kinda like a disease, the bark turned blackish.

You gotta keep trying Bill. If the rest of us are going to suffer growing fruit, you have to suffer with us....

Bill - If you want apples at the farm or in S. N.J. - go for the most headache-free ones. Liberty, Enterprise, Goldrush ( Goldrush if you have no cedars around - it does get some CAR ), Freedom, Sundance, Galarina. Or any good crab apple, like Chestnut crab, Dolgo, Hyslop. Screen the trunks with aluminum window screen and put a cage around them. I'm only at it for 5 years, but haven't had ANY problems. Stick with it !!!

My first year I planted 4 trees, 1 lived. My second year I planted 5, and I didn't have enough fence to finish fencing them, short by 2, I figured they would be fine for 2 weeks until I got back, nope. Deer ate both of them. I now make sure to have enough time, and material to do things right the first time. This year I am planting 7 more. I hope I have the fence for it.

Good idea Daniel. It's certainly good enough to deserve that. Let's see how it does for us on B118 down the road a few years.

Come on Bill......if I can do it anybody can.....and I planted "people apples" and I got apples last year....only a few....but I got some. I have lost 1 to voles. I use gravel on my weed barrier and not mulch and that seems to have done the trick. I need to expand into pears and some crabs as well.

4wanderingeyes, post #10 - Get enough fencing and aluminum window screen to protect from mice / voles and deer. You'll thank yourself later !! After losing some apple trees to voles a few years back ( using other methods ), I learned from guys on this forum and a couple local orchard owners. Now I've been putting weed barrier down, cover it with crushed limestone gravel, wrap the trunks with aluminum window screen, and put stout cages around them for deer protection. Not one problem !! I learned the hard way - now I try to pass along the tried / proven ways I learned from the experts.

I have learned. The past 2 years I have made sure to plant and fence, and screen my trees the same day. This year I bought a used role of fence, I am not sure how many feet is in the role, but it looks like a good length. I wont leave until they are protected. I learned my lesson.
