Third spring after logging

I took a walk in NJ today. Don't really hunt here but may in the next few years. This will be the third summer after logging.

We took a lot of oak, gum and almost all the pines. The pine bark Beatles were getting them so they went for pulp.

Small pines and sweet gums are dominating the regen right now.

By the end of this summer or after next I'm going to be cutting the deer trails. Can't wait to see how that works.

Everyone likes pics so here they are.

In terms of deer food and long term cover, that might benefit from a controlled burn.

Looks nice though.

Thanks,

Jack

Nope not me..
Momma said don't play with matches.

If you've got the time and money, I understand arsenal will give similar results.

Oh and, some of the green in the pics is Mountain Laurel. Forester tells me it has oil in it and burns HOT.. Ive got some big patches of it too.

Being from the Midwest and never having visited the east coast it's hard for me to grasp that New Jersey is anything other than urban.

Yep we get a bad rap.

My land is in about the middle of this pic just south of the lake. Notice all the ag fields in the area..

This is the NJ everyone sees on TV. 2.5 hours north. Not a field in sight and yep, the gray color is concrete.

My neighbor in MO was mortified when he heard a guy from Jersey bought the place. After I met him he swore I was lying.

I can see that. I would probably think the same thing!!

My favorite story is my realtor in MO. He's a whole other story by himself. But 3 of us friends bought farms in MO at the same time. After the first 6 pack (for him) and looking at about 10 farms. the realtor stopped the truck on a mud road. He said you boys can't be from NJ. You're farm boys!

I'm not but, I grew up next to one. My two buddy's were.
We say jersey, not joisy. :)

But I do have friends from WI that have no idea what I'm saying sometimes.

"Jeet" is my favorite. I'll go sloooww. It means "did you eat". Jeet!
Cause us Italian east coasters want to make sure you're fed.

Come on Bill - light up a good burn. Heck ....... we see those Jersey wildfires on the news here in Pa. all the time !! Pine Barrens are famous for 'em. :emoji_fearful::emoji_scream:

God love those East Coast Italians !!!! Even if you just ate ...... you're gonna eat again. They don't take no for an answer !! I've heard " Jeet ? " many times.

TMIL - ^^^^^^^ That's a great exchange between 2 people !! Gotta love it !!

To get back on topic, Bill ... you have created a beautiful mess there. :emoji_clap:

I think it will be. Deer numbers are low so the new growth isn't being browsed to death.
I went through one area that's still open low ground. It's being dominated by huge old swamp maples that are shading everything out. Going to head over this weekend and girdle a bunch of those.

I can't beleive thier breaking bud already.

It can make a big difference what some sunlight will do. After I got over the initial shock of a timber harvest I actually realized I should have cut even more. Chainsaw is a great habitat tool.

All that young, whippy, sapling growth looks great, Bill. I gotta believe things are only gonna get better with all the sunlight hitting the ground there. Good cover and browse happening. :emoji_thumbsup:

My boy called me one day from college, "Dad.....did you know Jersey has red-necks?" I told him that the entire state wasn't the "Jersey Shore" TV show. One of his new friends is from a farm in Jersey......I guess my boy didn't think those existed!!!!

That's why I want to get after the big swamp maples. Their leaving a hole in the middle of this timber. I'm 3 years late but I figure it will give me staggered year regrowth.
