The hunting cabin

any progress helps, gives them guys a good jumpstart in the spring

Made a stop at the woods today and was very happy to see the progress in the last week.
They.started framing Monday. Amazed at what got done. Builder says they are going to enclose it and heat it up so they can pour slabs.
Now I’m getting excited.

Work slowly continues on the.cabin. Should have the exterior completely finished next week.
Road restrictions should be lifted in a couple weeks so they can pour slabs and then start on the interior.

Thanks for the updates. This will make a great place year round, and countless memories of deer camps and fishing openers.

We are getting close. Should be wrapping up the project in a few weeks. Everything is roughed in and insulated. On to drywall and finish work.
Hoping to be in by mid-June but we’ll see. Everything has taken longer than was expected.

When you decided to build, did you get any estimates on a barndominium/shouse set up? I'm researching cost to build on a cabin minus the storage because we already have an older 40'x24' pole barn for that purpose. If you did, I'm curious what the approximate difference was for your size building. We'll be looking to do something in the 1200-1500sq foot range.

I did get a quote on a post-frame building. I’ll see if I can find the quote. It seemed expensive for what it was. They just did the shell. No finish work, no plumbing, electrical, or septic. When I did the math I didn’t see it being cheaper. And I didn’t want to do any of the work myself.

do you mind sharing how much this project has set you back? I should have bit the bullet 12 years ago when I first started thinking about building a cabin ... but alas, here I am still hemming & hawing without a cabin or the memories that could have been made there.

I recently bought a park model trailer. It's going to use the same deck as a small log cabin at my place. The park model trailer will add a TV area, Kitchen, full bath room, closets, bedroom w/ queen bed, and a loft that can sleep about 4 guys. I got a new well being dug next week and septic being set, as well as a concrete pad for the trailer, and more concrete for a patio area and larger apron on my pole shed, etc. Lots to co-ordinate.....but I will be done by the end of June. Bought the trailer new for $75 k which includes set up and all appliances and HVAC etc. Well, septic and concrete and etc is gonna push the project to about $120 k +/-.... complete. Do it right or dont do it.....my mantra lately.

Mine is similar to that shown....but has a more cabin flavor to the interior and it's got a grey exterior. plan is working out slick. Edit: I added a pic of the interior and a pic of my current cabin. I will extend the deck to the new trailer....and use that cabin as a bunkhouse. IMG_4130.JPGIMG_4087.JPG

Gonna be nice to have some AC this summer and a place to make some lunch and maybe sneak a nap in the recliner. Grin.IMG_4087.JPGIMG_3941.JPGIMG_3929.JPG

It’s going to be right around $300K all in. 2 bed, 1 bath, about 1,100sf living space and about the same for garage. Building is not cheap nowadays.

You're doing the project I WISH I would have done years ago. I got held back for several reasons....which I do not care to expound on. Doing what you got is well worth having for the long run. And you will look back some years from now and be one happy camper for doing this.

The sand is running lower in my hour glass, and the cost vs reward to do this cabin and the time to get it done got away from me. Thus I am doing the park model trailer and improvements at my place. The nearly instant reward is helpful to me. I only got x number of years to enjoy this camp with my family. It's a good set up for my time and place.

Interesting comparison to me. I will have about 1/2 the investment....and maybe 1/2 or less the benefits of your build...but it will work for me. I remember about a year and a half ago when we were discussing a cabin build. What I priced for a conventional build was getting way out of line for me....not to mention the inability to manage a build from my winter place in OZ. Why I took a different path. Interesting.....and thanks for sharing.

That’s why I bought the house next to my property, I was nervous about the huge investment (for me at least), but it’s worked out great so far, 9 mos in.

Purchasing our cabin was one of the best decisions we made. While investing the money in the markets would have a higher ROI, the cabin has created memories and provided 15 years of enjoyment hunting, fishing, riding ATVs and making new friends.

Ours is a simple 2BR, 1 Bath open design with a detached 2 car garage. We did our research, and found one we could afford. We decided “good enough” not “perfection” — a decision that has allowed many to enjoy the property these past years. It is still possible to do that today!

I wish I could have done it a bit sooner. Tried buying the acre from the owner the previous 2 years. Finally got him to agree.
The lot connects directly to my woods so I can walk out and to my stands.
