The great value in topworking

These pear pics illustrate the great value in grafting Callery pears.

First pic show a pear topworked the spring 2024. Three big pears.

I rest my case.

Can you elaborate on your process?

How big are the trees you are top working? What varieties are the scions you are using? What grafting method are you using?

I have a huge Callery pears grafting project underway, but still no pears. I know I need to get more sun to the grafted trees, but I feel like they should be at least putting out some flowers.

Wow very nice. I top worked a few trees this year for the first time. They were 10+ year old apple trees and a number of grafts took. On average how long until they new top worked limbs start producing?

Yes, see below for the answers to your questions:

All three of those shown above were about 2 to 2.5 inches DBH, and that is the height at which I topped them. I estimate that the trees were about 10-12 feet tall before I cut them off, and by the end of the first year they had grown back to almost as tall as when I topped them.

I use bark grafting and brace the grafts the first two years with sticks of cane (bamboo) and duct tape. Without the bracing, our storms will break off the new grafts. Leave the bracing on a couple of years, but cut the tape at the graft before the end of the first year to allow for growth. I can't stress too much how important it is to brace the grafts. I use electrical tape for the actual grafting and duct tape for the bracing. As the tree grows, I add more duct tape from time to time.

The first tree was done with Sweet Advent Scions. The second tree was done with Olympic Giant scions. The last tree was done with scions from an unknown variety from an old home place, but it sure looks like that one is going to be a Kieffer.

All three of the above are in full sun. I have done other in partial shade that are slower to fruit and generally have less fruit when they start.

In full sun you should see at least some flowers by the second year, and by the third year a lot more. I have occasionally seen flowers on first year scions, but I would pull those off.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

See my reply to Telemark.

Is this method the best to do also with persimmions?

I top worked several callery pears this year agian I did it a couple years ago but didn’t leave any nurse branch’s last time and project failed this year I left nurse branches and many of my grafts are doing very well I should of taken a few photos last weekend when I checked on them I also top worked several native pecans on the edge of my field behind the house over to paper-shell verities many of them have taken also I do think I jumped the gun a little on both of these this spring as the bark wasn’t slipping on all the trees the days I did it. A week latter I went over to a coworkers place and top worked 1/2 dozen callery for him and he said all of those took. I think most of what I grafted where keiffer and some Olympic giant but I have quite a few pear trees to choose from for scion wood. I even shipped some to telemark for his project left over from my grafting. For me at least leaving a nurse branch seems to increase my success and if I couldn’t leave a nurse branch above the graft I taped a bird perch stick to the tree trunk over my grafts.

Side by side persimmon trees done Spring of 2025 (67 days ago). I will probably remove one of these but haven’t made up my mind first sure.

I flag all callery pears whenever I see them

Grafted 12 with Keiffer this past spring

Maybe this is why I have fruit on so many trees this year? A first for any of my trees. I top worked them all last spring thinking the roots must be struggling to keep up with the above ground growth.

I’d say second year maybe third I will usually pull all blooms second year so there isn’t fruit weight on a young graft even on the third year I pull most blooms/fruit I’ve got a third year Dr Deer, Gate and Mckelvey that I left about 3-5 blooms/fruit on this year just to sample the fruit check drop time. Next year I may let them set a full fruit load. Anyone with more top work experience please chime in on your top work protection in the years after the graft what’s your process?

Is there a reason you dont use electrical tape for the bamboo stake?

It would probably work fine, but it just seems to stretch too much for me to use up at the top. I just trust a good, strong duct tape better. I’ve had scions grow longer than 7 feet the first year, and the wind can put a lot of force on something that long. Also, the duct tape really grabs the cane and resists coming loose from rain.

That's incredible. I've never had more than 3 feet per year. What time of year do you graft?

This Year:

Persimmons - Around 4/20/25

Pears - Around 3/30/25

Apples - Around 4/5/25

All will not achieve 7 feet, but most will be 4 or more.

Is there a thread that covers grafting?
