Taking great harvest photos

Here is an example of letting my older son have a little fun with his pictures while being respectful and allowing me to take a bunch of pictures so that at least a handful would turn out nice.

Here is an example of how getting down flat on the ground and shooting upwards can really make a picture “pop!” While the regular photo shows this turkey well, the upward angle includes so much more of the whole subject.

Another place where the angle means a whole different looking picture is while shed hunting. I like to take pictures of how they lay when I find them and this seems to bring out the antler real well.

I also like to grab as many field photos of deer as I can within the time I have available, before field dressing. I’m a believer that an extra 15 minutes taking photos isn’t going to affect the quality of table fare as far as the meat is concerned. Lends to cleaner deer and a more full look, when practical.

And also, just plain fun outdoors pictures like the shed hunting day with the kids. Making sure they got the credit for that antler they found that dad happened to walk by.

Just about every picture i just posted is in reverse order, but I think you all can figure it out, sorry bout that.

I immediately had her switch the pics. First pic had all good comments but not what I wanted out there for her first success.

Nice job.
Heck there are places that might be turned inside out. And we aren’t even thinking about future places.

I always get right then kill pics and along the way pics to.

Phones take some incredible photos these days and we are all carrying them. I carry a very compact tripod and phone holder in my pack. They take up very little room and I have found those first photos after cleaning up any blood and making deer presentable to be the pics I end up liking best. Not putting bloody pics out there for the general public helps with their impression of us all. Like it or not when it comes to issues that we all care about we need to protect our image with people that don’t share our passion.

I should add that stuff to my recovery bag.

I like to get good field photos. Ive probably gone overboard in past years but ive never regretted it.

Another nice thing about having glass eyes is they dont reflect at night. I like them even with fresh deer.

New Iphones are amazing. I have full frame professional camera equipment but it hardly compares anymore to the settings on the new iPhones.

Sounds like there is a difference between "Facebook Deer & Deer Hunting" deer photos and real photos.

I can't imagine trying to pull a deer's eyes out of his head and putting fake ones in. I mean in the over 120 deer I have killed and taken pics of, i have never heard anyone comment that the eyes on that dead deer don't look good??

What's next ... hoof polish, nose gloss, artificial backgrounds?

LOL ^^^ How about Christmas lights background? Old man got his doe Thur nt. He liked this pic better than the 1 I made him field pose with.

I enjoy all the pics. I don't look at the tailgate ones any less, maybe more. I try to tuck the tongues in. We don't have mountain backdrops, just bush honeysuckle and plowed fields. Still try to make the most of it.

Oh yeah, I do try to snap 20 quick pics of a nice buck then it's easy to pick out the couple good ones.

I may not have the correct lighting or wipe all the blood away but I always make sure the tongue is nowhere to be seen. Lately I’ve just tried to get a shot on how I find them with my weapon. I guess if I got a big one Id take a little more time and try to get a bunch of decent ones but most of the time they look like this.

LOL... you dont take out the real eyes. Taxidermy eyes are just glass or plastic and pop in like contacts. If your deer sat and the eyes sunk in or got cloudy youd see the reason. Its a $9, 3 minute process at most.

Great pic of the ol man! I know he's a hard core deer hunter, he drinks Old Style!

My buddy got this one at the ranch a couple days ago. I thought the photo turned out nice even with a bright sun, no cloud cover.

In sunny conditions, taking photo with sun generally behind subject (like this one) makes for better photo.

Nice simple picture and love the old Savage 99 and scope.

I avoid the grip n grin. I try to make everything about the animal as it lays. It seems to be less bothersome to people who don’t support or understand hunting. If I am in frame (which I’m usually not because I hunt public land alone) I make sure that my positioning seems reverent.

This angle has really become my favorite...

And, I did a short panning video this year. I filmed it in 4K 60fps, stabilized it in davinci Resolve, then slowed it down to 24 frames for a slo-mo look. Turned out awesome. Ignore the HORRIBLE resolution if you aren’t using a pc or the YouTube app to view it. Playing straight from the imbedded link destroys the image quality.
