Intel having a good day, up 12.5% at the moment. Hey my 13 yr old put $150 in an etrade account we opened as custodians. What should he invest it in? I want him to learn conservative investing, more of a buy and hold mentality. Stick to an index fund? He keeps looking at Ford and others that are familiar to him. Any solid blue chips right now?
I don't think "buy and hold" is anything close to "conservative investing." That's called value investing.
Conservative investing is T-bills, money market, anything that is nearly guaranteed.
I would start the account with $500, and take the journey with him. Teach him about what to buy and when and why. Teach him about value investing, covered calls, drawdowns, emotional control, short-term trading on news, etc. That will set him up with a mentality of learning about the markets as well as experience in the markets, that might just turn him into a rainmaker. This is exactly what I intend to do for my nephew. He already has an interest in it, so all I need to do it get the ball rolling on his education, and he should be set by the time he's an adult.
Experience is the best teacher.
If by "conservative investing" you mean not going headlong into something you don't know much about, then you are talking about what most people would call "not gambling." There is a lot of nuance in the investing world, and I encourage everyone who invests money to learn as much as they can about the entire industry.
If you just want to put $150 into a stock and watch it move, then the obvious choice is PLTR. It won't teach him anything at all, because he won't understand what is happening or why, but at least he can watch it grow over time.
