Started to plow some ground

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
2 of our camp members jumped on the JD - 5055 and worked up 2 fields this past weekend. Soil rolled over real well and wasn't as wet as we thought it would be. It ( soil ) was actually pretty nice to work. More plowing to follow this coming weekend and some disking too. We have regular seed corn and some RR corn to plant in 3 different plots.

2 existing white clover plots will be sprayed for killing grass, then will be fertilized with 0-20-20. 2 strips of Starfire red clover, timothy and alfalfa mix will get planted, and a big patch of buckwheat for the spring's planting. Brassicas to go in mid-July. Winter rye will finish around Labor Day.

Sounds like you guys have a nice plan you are following. I am sure I missed it in the past but how many acres are you playing with? How many deer do you take in an average year. I was in shippenburg last week. Long drive but PA is a neat looking state from a habitat point. Doesn't seem to be many flat areas.

Chummer - We have 240 acres that we have a good time with. We avg. 5 to 8 deer per year, but a fair % of our guys are older and don't hunt hard anymore. It's usually the same 6 to 8 guys who get the deer because we put the time and effort in.

Shippensburg is in extreme south-central Pa. and is in farming country. That area has many apple and peach orchards & nurseries. Adams County Nursery is near there. The flattest land in Pa. is probably nearer Philadelphia. My camp is in the north-central mountains - the Pine Creek drainage area. Mountains there are STEEP & high with somewhat flattened tops. Much of Pa. is mountainous or very " hilly ". Valleys between mountain ridges is where the back-country farms are.

We have a great time improving our habitat. We bust each other's stones and laugh a lot while doing it all. It's work but actually more fun than work !! A day spent planting stuff at the cabin unloads lots of stress - and we're outdoors. Doesn't get much better !! :)
