Just a bit of info - SLN's apple variety "Rhuby" makes a very tasty apple. Depends on your local climate possibly, but in NC Pa. mountains, zone 5/6 border, no spray - they look clean and taste great!!! Sweet & tangy both, crisp & juicy. FWIW.I have not put an order in anywhere yet. Leaning towards a place for both rootstock and trees.
Ordering will be up next tuesday. Thinking (2) Violi's (2) Winterwildlife () AWHO maybe MN 1734, Macfree, or Nova EZgro. They got alot of unique varieties far as tree nurseries go in the USA. Any good ones I am missing. Might be adding Big Deer Crab. I already have Kerr, trailman, macoun, empire. looking for only zone 3 trees at camp. Might steal some scion material off macfree. Need a early apple for home to replace rusty pristine.
I already had that one on my list because think I saw you posted about that one beforeJust a bit of info - SLN's apple variety "Rhuby" makes a very tasty apple. Maybe I posted about Rhuby before - just don't remember. Wife isn't a big apple fan - but she flipped over Rhuby. "WOW - what kind is this?" were her words as we both tasted it for the first time a few weeks ago. It even caught me by surprise at the great taste.I already had that one on my list because think I saw you posted about that one before
coworker hopped on my order. He put elderberries, currents, grapes, and a pear. They didn’t have chenango strawberry, kinda bummed, I don’t think I’ll order anything except maybe some elderberries. Got four last year from them and they were the best I ever planted. One even fruited. Looked like nothing and was hesitant but they took off.
What are the characteristics of Siberian crab rootstock?coworker hopped on my order. He put elderberries, currents, grapes, and a pear.
B116,
St lawrences apples are all on full sized rootstock. Mostly antonovka, some crabs are on siberian crabapple. Supposedly all seedlings, not clonal stock. I'd prefer to order from other nurseries, but they have a very complete selection of zone 3 and zone 2 trees. Winters are milder than they used to be up north. But, they get their cold spells. I could get by with B118 on the right graft probably. Son-in-law is building a house in my foodplot......... I am removing 2 or 3 trees for his driveway. One of them in Dolgo on B118. Trying to get that up there veterans day weekend. Trailman and AWHO on anty is going up too.
