Spring/Summer/Fall plots

A little review of this yr's plot progress...

Last fall planted a mix of clovers and alfalfa, with awnless wheat and rye. Spring and summer the deer were in it a lot. They ate the awnless wheat heads, didn't touch the rye heads. Lots of cover in that plot.

Then they shifted to milo/sunflowers/pumpkin plot. It's too early for me to want them in there, so I mowed the rye down. Now I'm seeing them in the clover a lot but not in the milo as much. The milo/sunflowers are about waist high. My hope is that they'll avoid the thick stuff until it's really desirable and the sunflowers can have a chance. I don't think it's likely though. I'm really liking the milo plot though. Growing great with some timely summer rains!

Sounds good Normally my goto is to mow the winter/srping small grains plots and let the clover try to shine vs the weeds. MY little home plot of 1/2 acre, I'm letting 2/3rds of it alone to goto mature rye / wheat. Deer are eating both seed heads. Seeing volunteer rye of about 12 inches in there. Some weeds and some pretty tall medium red clover with black mature seed heads. Middle section is vaious white clovers with a good shot of plantain, a native weed I don't mind. Plantain needs a frost or two before deer are much interested in it.

Kinda feel like doing someting to the mature grains, but waiting till mid august atleast, likel labor day weekend.

Mix is the way to go. Sometimes you focus on one kind of plant, and they hammer it in a week or two, and theyre on to the next best thing. Mixes keep em coming back week after week. Stuff they loose interest in end up being better for your land in the long run. Don't want them hammering everything, although a bit of ya does.......

Might, just might time a light gly spray with a decent time to throw sunflower seed in the backyard plot for 2026. Never messed with them. Wife says no to daikon radish, too smelly.

Lol, I don't plant turnips in the yard plots anymore because the deer won't touch them... and they stink like crazy when they thaw out and rot in the spring.

Think it was 2022, Plant turnips in the spring at camp. I had a few almost bowling ball sized ones in the fall. When they bolt, they dont screw with it.
