Spreader?

Catscratch

5 year old buck +
I'm thinking I need a spreader. I have a little pull behind but it tips to easily.

1. Which is bettter in your experience; atv rack mount, receiver mount, or large pull behind?

2. Brands to avoid?

3. Brands that are golden?

I have a moultrie receiver mount that is OK. I would not run fertilizer through that electric gate. Large pull behind is good if you’re not going to be in some rough areas. I use tractor mount pto driven spreader in my main food plots, receiver hitch sxs mount for quicker single jobs and rougher ground

I have a front mounted ATV rack spreader and it works fine. I used it for planting 10 acres of crp, and it did a good job in general. I don't like using that for fertilizer though as that tends to clump up more and I don't like getting fertilizer on the ATV.

For spreading fertilizer and large seeds like corn/soybeans, I prefer my ATV pull behind spreader. I can fit about 100 pounds of seed or 200 pounds of fertilizer in it at a time and it is easy to control the opening size from the seat of the ATV as that determines how fast the seed or fertilizer spreads. The pull behind spreader works great and I've probably spread 10,000 pounds of fertilizer and seed through it in the last 10 years. I just hose it down really well after each use and spray WD40 on all the metal components to prevent rust.

What is name of the spreader that has spread 10,000 pounds?

I’ll have to check the name of it, but here is a picture of it in action top dressing urea. I waited a little too long as my brassicas were pretty tall already.

I bought the spreader at Fleet Farm, but I just looked online and they didn't have this specific model for sale. I've used this spreader for over 10 years and I have another one just like it at my cabin that I used 10 years before that.

It looks like the Agri-Fab (45-0329) 185 pound spreader for $369.99 from Amazon.

If mine broke tomorrow, I'd buy the exact same one again. I think it has a 4 or 5 mph speed limit and I think it is important to stay under that speed as the gears on this spreader aren't made for highway speeds.

I never had good luck with the lawn type spreaders. Many plots were too uneven and they would tip over. They do fine with fertilizer and pelletized lime, but not dry ag lime.

@Catscratch , what do you want to spread, how much, and how often? I've pretty much tried every style and can give feedback on them all. Today, I have a Groundbuster 6' dual auger model lime spreader (for ag lime), a 5' single auger I got for a steal that we use for fertilizer and several different chest spreaders for small seed. We have an RTP Genesis No-till drill as well. I think this is the best combo and have no plans to change it.

We sold off an old 10' lime spreader, maybe an EZ-flo brand, a few 4-6' garber pull behind drop spreaders and a 3pt PTO spreader to fund what we have today.

I want to spread wheat, corn, beans, and fert. Don't need it to hold more than 50lbs but I do want easy. I've been using a yard type John Deere spreader for spreading big seed but it tips very easy and doesn't have great metering. Pull it with my zeroturn mower.

I'd vote Solo chest spreader. Corn is a big seed. I think many smaller spreaders will have issues with a large seed like it.

If you're looking at ATV spreaders, I've had my best success with front rack mounted spreaders. On the front, it's easier to keep an eye on what's going on. Makes for a handy little ATV gear bucket when you're not using it as a spreader.

Tow behind spreaders are great if your ground isn't rough and you don't have long distances to taxi the things. They can take a beating from bouncing around. I destroyed two Agri-fab units in my early years of plotting.

For large quantities I go with the tractor PTO spreader.

Just spreading seed any ATV or reciever psreader will be more or less ok. I have the buyer 100lb one. Spreading lme or fertilizer, you need a good one for that. solo of fisher vehicle spreaders are expensive but you need that motor out of the nasty corrosive chemicals.

Gandy tow behind drop spreader are great. I got a 3 footer for the ATV. Expensive, but built porperly for nasty chemicals.

I am good with what I own. I would like a walk behind drop spreader for going round apple and spruce trees.

From what you guys are saying I don't think I want a pull-behind. I will have rough ground, and I don't want to drive slow to get to a remote spot.

This points to a front or rear mount ATV spreader, with the knowledge that I won't use it for fert. I could see a front unit being nice to keep an eye on things. When I pull my current spreader I'm always turning to watch whats going on... and that gets old. Do not like the idea of driving into a cloud of dust though.

Get a herd.

No recommendation here. Just a watchout. I had one for a few years that mounted on, and cantilevered off the back of, the rear rack of an ATV. It worked really well until the steel mounting bracket broke from fatigue from the bouncing up and down the hopper did during use.
