Soprano pear

Satriale's pear......... Check it out, could be calley's cure. Gottoa go through alot of rocks to find a nugget.

How's Pele's pear field going telemark?

Not sure what you mean about Pele's pear field.

Thought you had an old soccer field filled with wild pears

Ah yes. It's going well. I'll get out and get some photos of the grafts.

Size comparison From left to right. (1) Soprano Pear (2) NativNurseries Wild deer pear
(3,4,5,6) picked up under several Bradford or Cleveland trees , not 100% sure because I didn't plant them but tried to pick up the biggest pears.View attachment 85208
I've also planted some of NN's wild deer pears and they look just like pears 3-6. Such a bummer! I plan to graft the majority of mine.

Interesting that "Native" Nurseries sells Chinese Callery pears. I haven't done business with them, but that is a bit worrying.

They actually quit selling them once they figured out the fruit was not the size of the mother tree. Either way it is invasive and I'm not sure why they were selling them in the first place. Pretty sure all of their trees are seedlings and not grafted.

For those that never saw it , here's the video that SOLD me on The NativNurseries Wild deer pears that didn't pan out lol . I planted 5 and only have 3 left. One is in the front yard and the pears have gotten a -little- bigger now , but nowhere near as big as in the video. I have 2 in my hunting plot , one is a total dud that gets bb or a little bigger sized pears. The other is so so, IT'S always loaded even when frost gets the pear trees right next to it, and it has pears in Nov and I have pics of bucks eating the pears..So it'll probably stay until I see how my Gilmer Christmas and Wildlife pears planted last year from the Wildlife Group do.

I'm going to try topworking the wost one with the smallest pears into a Soprano pear. I have a couple questions , should I cut the tree down to about 4 1/2 - 5 foot ? and leave just the trunk and no branches ?. Do I need to graft right away after cutting the tree down , OR can I come back in a few days or a week and cut a inch or two off the top so it's fresh and not oxidized over ?. I did watch one youtube video and it said not to dilly dally with the scion when whittling it down...so I wonder if that applies to the tree itself needing to be freshly cut.

In most top work jobs I see them grafting in 2 or 3 Scions, do you let them all grow OR after a while cut two off to let one grow into a central leader ?. I didn't measure it so I'd say 10 -11 inches around , so it's not a huge tree.

Man, that is a good question. I prefer to graft low, but my results grafting Callery are all over the map. I'll try to put something together in the next week or so. In any case, it's still a bit early for anything.

I found a similar pear years ago, grafted it and now have 5 of them producing on my farm. All my other pears have dropped except a handful on my Morse Hybrid and a single pear on a Blue Hill November Nectar (no longer offered). These are hard as rocks still, haven't dropped anything, and the inner skin is still green. Not sure when they'll start to drop, but the parent tree is usually finished by new years. Should be a magnet that time of year.

Cool , I have a couple Gilmer Christmas and Wildlife pear trees from The Wildlife group , and 2 Double-D pear trees From Bolu . Only planted them last year and this year so it'll be a while before I find out if they hang until Dec-Jan here. All are supposed to get golf ball to 2 inch size pears. I did order a Winter Deer pear from Blue Hill for 2026 that has 2’’ pears that drop from January – March. Never tried grafting , but I'd like to try grafting the Pear tree I found to have 3 or 4 more .
