Screen

Took an updated photo on Sunday of our annual NW Whitetail HD screen. Over 10' in most locations and very filled out. Happy with the results from the later planting, had a few timely rains but like most of the upper Midwest, it's been dry here for the most part of the past month. Not the best pic but didn't want to scent up the plot a whole bunch for the wide angle view.
Brassicas are lacking nutrients but they are knee high for reference.

How do your screens look now if they have been frost? Mine looked marginal this summer but weren’t thick enough. Frost really hit them hard.

I've been tagged out since Oct 14, haven't been back there. I'll ask my buddy to snap a pic next time he's there.

Should have taken a picture of mine yesterday, it’s not doing well at all. A lot of it went down or at least broke halfway up with wind. The snow on Halloween further degraded it. It is not adequately serving its purpose right now. Last year’s fared much better but it also had much better growing/planting conditions last year.

Mine are seriously diminished....but still standing and remain fairly effective. I have a blend of the North Woods Whitetail screen and a mix by Green Cover. It's certainly better than what I had in prior years using just the Egyptian wheat or the Green Cover screen mix.

The pic directly below is from about 10 days ago. It has diminished from this shown. I wish I had a more recent pic. Maybe early next week.

Mine was the Northwoods HD Screen. Some came up great but most was spotty. I think the chemical I sprayed with the Gly hindered some seeds from germinating. I think it was Simazine. Followed the directions but I must have done something wrong. May try to drill next year or go with a different solution. The frost just hammered it.

Yeah mine was northwoods too. Super impressed. Will get more for next year to do some other areas. I just sprayed. Disc and let some other stuff germinate, sprayed again, disced again and broadcast and then packed. Gly was all I sprayed

I planted those screens until my miscanthus got up to speed. But giant MG is by far the best long term solution I have found.

How I wish my ground was better drained and in a warmer zone so I could be comfortable using MG..

What zone is required for MG? My ground is well drained.......but I am north of you Gypsy.

I don't think it is conclusive and may vary by variety but Zone 4 seemed to be borderline with some reports of winter killing. Would hate to put that much time and $ in only to have it winter kill.

I'm well into 4B and will be going into my second winter this year, have been very happy with it so far despite the planting year being a D4 drought.

I planted MG about 4 years ago here in central Minnesota about 45 minutes South of Foggy and I just planted it with no care afterwards at all. I probably got around 20% still growing at it's a little bigger every year. I'm sure if I would have taken time to take out competing weeds to help I would have maybe twice as much. Good chance a lot of the ones that didn't make it were on me. I planted in about 5 different spots and each location still has some that looks like it will keep improving and spreading.

I was just reading about how to plant MG. Looks like it should be about 3" deep and lay the MG horizontally. Sounds like lots of work to plant.

Wonder if I were to make a 3" deep trench using my single shank ripper? Think that would work for a trench to plant into?

Lots of planting info around the web.

The system I used-
Rototiller set to deepest mode and rip through an area. Then put a middle buster (tractor supply) on the tractor to create furrow. Lay the rhizomes into the furrow. Kick the furrow closed with boot to cover the rhizome. Pray for rain.

I was looking at a few video's on planting MG. Some of those guys were pretty serious about their grid pattern. Not sure I would put that much effort into it. I like your method better Brian.....and what I thought I would do if I were to plant some. Not sure I want that much work.....as some folks do.

I would plant three rows and alternate rhizomes the best you can within the three rows with ~18" between them. It doesn't have to be super technical.

After two years the stuff I planted in three rows is pretty dang thick but not a true wall yet, probably next year. The stuff I planted in two rows seems like it is several years away from being a wall.
