Rolling Basket: Anyone Use One? Pros and Cons

Victor Van Meter

5 year old buck +
For those of you who use a disc, does anyone use a rolling basket to break up clods? Just looking into possibly making one to use behind my disc if it is worth the time, effort and money.

No but I wish I had one. I know that doesn’t help

My Woods Seeder has a disk gang in front, a spiked roller about 15” diam behind the disk gang - where much of the weight rests - and then a cast iron cultipacker behind he spiked roller. That spiked roller busts up most of the dirt clods. There is no comparison between a pass with a stand alone disk and the woods seeder.

It is NOT a rolling basket - but if you have a cultipacker, you may be able to pull it behind your disk and bust up a lot of those dirt clods. I would hate to have to back up with that rig, though.

I do have a cultipacker, and that, along with a drag, is my usual process, just take forever. The way the plot is laid out, there is a lot of pulling forward and reversing to get to the next strip, so attaching it to the disc would be problematic.

Most people just put an old tire on the drag harrow. You could fill the tire with water if you need extra weight.

I bought one off of a Perfecta Cultivator two summers ok. It works decent to break clods if the ground isn't too wet. Works better with dry dirt with dead roots.
