ROD question

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
I've got some ROD plugs coming this spring. All info says it does well in wet ground - swamps, bogs, etc. Will it grow in moist ground ?? My intended planting site is along a small spring trickle in a swale. The spring doesn't run with water all year, but the ground stays more moist than surrounding woods. What do you gents think - try it - or look for wetter site ??

No, they will do fine in your situation. Near water is fine. IMO, they don't do as well when they are "in" water more than they are not.

I have ROD surviving on sand in MN. They do better the closer they get to sloughs, creeks, wet areas, but they will survive on high ground (in many cases).

I have yellow twig dogwood (color variation of ROD) that is growing well in locations that are not near water sources with no issues.

Thanks,

Jack

Bowsnbucks, The RODs I planted do very well in ground just like you described.

They will do great in moist ground. I have a bunch planted in exactly the same type of soil. Great shrub for deer.

Yup they seem to do well in very wet and moist ground by me. Go for it

Thanks gentlemen !!!

These are in a field in NE PA that is wet in the spring but dries out in summer. Just like you describe, there is a small spring or two in this field that run in spring but dries up come summer. It used to be a food plot I planted in ROD. I went with the ROD because It was a pain waiting for the field to dry out enough to work. What you are describing should be ideal.

Thanks for the info and pic, Diesel !!! The area I'm considering is in a logged swale that is now fairly open. I figured ROD would add some diversity since we have kind of a " blank slate ". We have no ROD on the property now. Gonna be cool to see how it does.

Do you cut them down at all, or just let 'em grow ?? I read they can be trimmed back to make more suckers / dense growth ??

I haven't had to cut them back, the deer keep them pruned up pretty well. I do believe that it has promoted more growth. I did brush hog a shooting lane in this field this fall. I am pretty confident the ROD that was cut in that lane will bounce right back. I will update in the spring.

Where's your Pa. spot - Bradford ?? Or Susquehanna ??

We have property in Bradford County.

Where did you find ROD plugs for sale?

BJE80 - Our Pa. Game Commission's Howard Nursery has them, but they don't sell to other states. They have a limited supply of ROD plugs - I got my order in the first morning of availability. Looks like Scott has a bead on some ROD from Itasca & U. of Idaho. ^^^^^

I bumped this up to show MojoRisin what ROD looks like. Diesel5610 at post #9 posted a good pic of a patch of it.
