Redneck Pickin!

Greyphase - Nice trees in the pic !! I see all the "normal" trees in the background, too. How many are you up to ??QUOTE]

I'm sort of embarrassed to admit this but I did a final count this fall and come up with 273 trees :emoji_face_palm: but I could be off by a couple. That's not counting the 40+ trees in the nursery, or the 55 rootstocks coming this spring.
I did sell a few apple trees locally this fall and hope to increase that number in years to come.
I also plan on offering some one on one grafting lessons this spring to try to spread the addiction.:emoji_scream:

Greyphase - You've got me beat by a lot !! I thought I was overboard with about 73 newer trees planted. Congrats on the big push !!

( I wonder how many apple & crab trees have been planted by contributors and lurkers/readers of this forum all around the country. After we're gone from this world, how many critters will still be eating from what we've planted ?? And how many future hunters/outdoors-people/rural folks will ask - " I wonder how this apple tree got here ?? " )

It's crazy how once most of us get started in this apple deal, we get addicted. I enjoy seeing grafts grow in pots in the back yard all summer. I'll give some to relatives who have rural acreage and are also hunters. I'll probably always have my finger in the apple/crab pie.

Maya - You're right it's a disease !! I find myself looking at wild trees for late-hangers and no/little signs of disease. I end up pulling over and inspecting trees that I never would have paid attention to before. It's kind of like being a teenager who just discovered girls - head's on a swivel checking them ALL out. I'll be grafting new trial trees even after my camp is full-up with apples and crabs. You never know when one or more of our planted trees may be a bear target or just not pan out for some reason.

I know the feeling Greyphase....my family thinks I’m really crazy sometimes.

@greyphase I knew I liked you for a reason! LOL!

Really nice espalier/trellis system, i don't think i'll ever do that but i sure admire others that do. For now I enjoy the old school freestanding look of them old trees so i aspire to have my own. Then again i don't like heights so why am i setting my self up for so much ladder work?

Saw these cordoned Apple trees at Mount Vernon this summer that remind me of some of the great looking espalier shown above.

I had never seen apples cordoned like this before and hope to eventually do something similar in the garden.
